I normally use Keen hiking shoes but thought I'd give these a try for the price. They're quite light weight, which is nice in some ways, but also not as good at protecting one's foot from sharp rocks, stick pokes, or snow/cold. If the outside gets wet, you feel the chill right away on the inside. Note, I didn't say your feet get wet, but if it's slush or wet snow, you feel the cold right away in the toes. Still, I think they are fine for fair weather use on maintained trails. I bought these to replace my Moab 2 shoes that I wore of the treads in a little less than a year. To qualify that, I was not walking on trails all the time and walking on concrete or asphalt will wear the treads off of any shoe. Merrell has an issue with sizing. They always say they run true to size. Fortunately, this model seems to. I had purchased a pair of the Yakotas which are very similar but I found they ran a half size too small. These were a perfect fit. I'm a frequent hiker and own asolo and oboz hiking shoes and always get blisters on long hikes with large elevation changes, it drives me nuts. Well, just went on my first hike with these moab 3s and my feet were very comfortable, and best part, no blisters. Blows my mind. Also had great traction in steep muddy conditions. These are now my default sneakers. I've bought previous Merrell's and these are just as comfortable. They will eventually wear out - the back where the heel slips in is the wear point in my experience. When that goes, they will start giving you blisters so it is time to order a new pair. These are some of the most comfortable shoes I have ever worn. Even for just around the house or doing the honey-do’s. With my wide feet and high instep, I rarely can find shoes that fit well. These shoes make my feet happy. If you want to walk a casual trail, these shoes are fine. For serious backpackers and or hikers, you would be better trying on boots at REI.
