When asked what he wanted for Christmas, my almost three year old son simply replied "treasure", so I was on the hunt and found this! We own many Melissa & Doug Toys, and the quality of this one is no exception. The chest is a nice size, made of wood and is actually quite solid/heavy for a toy. It certainly seems like it will stand up to toddler abuse. It has a distressed look to it, and the latch is a scull design with little jewels for eyes - pretty cool! Inside, there's a red, velvet drawstring pouch filled with plastic coins. The quality of these seems fine, and my son likes to count them and stack them, so there is a bit of educational value there as well. The chest has a little hidden compartment if you lift the middle slat, which I thought was fun. It also comes with an eyepatch and a bandana which at this point, my son doesn't use and he'll probably have to wait another ten years to do so because the bandana is so huge it could literally fit my husband. Hilarious! Seriously, It's so big that I wasn't at all surprised when I read another review that referred to it as a flag, but I confirmed it is indeed a giant bandana when it arrived and said so on the packaging! I also ordered a little telescope and a treasure map to go along with this, hoping to inspire some good imaginary play from my son. Five stars for the awesome chest, treasure, and the good laugh the "bandana" gave us.

When I ordered this playset, I was expecting the same kind of cheaply made things you would expect to find at a dollar store- I was purchasing primarily for the chest, as it's hard to find a pirate chest, even for play, that's the right size and inexpensive. I was pleasantly surprised! The box is real wood and painted with detail. The skull latch is plastic, but the fake jewel eyes appear to glow in the right lighting. It does have a decently sized secret compartment at the bottom- one of the wood planks pulls away to reveal additional storage about one inch deep. It's not terribly well hidden, the plank has a notch that lets you know it pulls away, but that does make it easier to use - it is, after all, a playset. In addition, the bandana is a large size, enough that I could use it as a small pirate flag. The eyepatch is cloth, with elastic and velcro clasp, to fit any size head. And the plastic coins are thick, good quality, and detailed- and come in a soft cloth bag that is very pleasing to the touch. Also, something they fail to mention, but it a nice detail- the cardboard wrapping the box when it arrives, has a treasure map on the bottom that you could cut out and play with- it's just cardboard, so not the quality of the other items, but could still be used for fun for a while. It has been a very long time since I have seen toys made of this quality, and I think if you were to find this same playset at a store such as Walmart or Target, they would be charging at least ten dollars more. This was definitely worth the buy!

We purchased this for our son to hold his "treats' (candy and small toys he earns for making good choices and moving his token across a pirate treasure map to the "X"). It is solid wood and built very sturdy! I cannot comment how well it would hold up to a child playing with it frequently, as ours stays on the bookshelf until our son lands on the "X" but like all the other M&D toys we've purchased it goes above and beyond expectation for both workmanship and creativity. Probably the "cheapest" looking item is the pirate flag but even it is nice for an additional toy within a toy. It feels like a poly/cotton blend, like a sheet. The eye patch is very well made, the band is black elastic with a small velcro piece on each end to secure it. Our son has a big head and we had no trouble with the fit. The coins of course look fake, but kids don't care- they're about the size of a half dollar and the little red velour bag they come in even has a gold drawstring! You can tell a lot of thought and care was put into the design and build of this toy. Don't hesitate to get it because the price seems a bit high for such a product- it is WELL WORTH IT! My only "complaint" and it is a minor one is two fingerprint sized mars on the painted finish- it looks like whomever applied the distress coat of paint touched the lid with two fingers to turn or hold it and it exposed the plain green-brown coat underneath. Of course our son doesn't care and if I really wanted to, it'd be an easy touch-up but I barely notice it anymore- I think it makes our chest special!!

I bought this set specifically for the chest itself, because of other chests sold by them selves having poor ratings, and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!!! It's sturdy, and the skull latch that you turn to open the chest is so neat! My son will love this for an xmas gift, we filled it about 300 metal coins, and lots of jewels, added a brass scope, and compass, added a treasure map, and some seashells to make it look like it really came from the ocean, and there is still room to add more!!! And it's holding the weight of the coins wonderfully, and the hidden compartment on the bottom of the chest is just another plus, we put a gold ring and a pirate coin necklace in it.. the things that came in the chest were wonderful quality, I was so impressed with the eye patch that I had to keep it in the chest, and used the velvet bag to keep some pirate necklaces made from "skulls and bones" in it, the flag is cute, he'll want to put that on his wall right away, and the coins were the best quality plastic coins I've seen yet! Nice and sturdy, I didn't include them in the chest since we went with metal pirate coins, but I gave them to him to play with and he loved them! Loves the skull on the front and the ship on the back, he has been counting them and carrying them around ever since! I love this set! So pleased with this purchase.. the only downside is that I don't know how I'll top this gift next year! If you want a good quality pirate chest, to fill with whatever you please, this is by far the best one to go with, I looked through at least 50 other chests and this one was worth every penny!

My kids are iffy on pirates. Don't love them, don't hate them, and the same applies for this. I would give it three stars but the product is better than that. It's quality stuff and can be fun, but it's not a great auto-generator of fun. Your kids won't suddenly love pirates. Look, this just seemed like a fun little gift and I think my kids have played with it like 3 times. Again, good product, but it doesn't seem to carry that intrinsic spark that the best creative play toys do. Does that make sense?

I bought this chest for a treasure hunt for my son's 7th birthday party. I spent hours on-line trying to find a square chest, since his party was a Minecraft themed party rather than a pirate theme. I could not find anything truly square that would do the job. I saw this when searching for wooden chests. I deliberated about buying it because it was hard to tell on-line how much treasure it would actually hold. There were conflicting reviews, some reviewers thought is was larger than they expected and some thought it was smaller. I needed it to hold several treasures (enough for up to 20 kids). When it arrived I was pleased that is was larger than I was expecting it to be and that my treasures easily fit into this chest. I filled it with many mardi gras necklaces, gold coins, jeweled rings, and large jewels (red for redstone, emerald, diamond, etc for the Minecraft elements). I also found some small novelty treasure chests that were just large enough to hold a Hershey's chocolate nugget (iron ore for Minecraft) and I put 20 of them in this treasure chest as well. My one word of advice if you are having a treasure hunt. Make a small treasure bag for each kid and put them in the treasure chest and then, if needed, sprinkle a few loose treasures on the top for effect. I did not do that and left all the treasures "loose" in the chest. When the kids finally found this chest at our treasure hunt, they went wild, with "treasure" flying every where and it was hard to be sure every kid got at least one of every type of item in the chest. This treasure chest would hold 20 small bags (like the small red bag that comes with the chest or a sandwich bag that is maybe 1/3 to 1/2 half full) filled with a couple of mardi gras necklaces, rings, jewels, coins, and small candies. The chest itself seemed well made to me, as have other Melissa and Doug products we have purchased. The chest was even dropped on the ground from standing height and it is still intact. My kids haven't used the other things much that came with the chest although they would be great accessories for a Halloween pirate costume. The bandana is a little on the large side but I think it would work fine for using it as a head covering. The coins are not really "gold" in color, so if you want gold-colored coins, you'll need to purchase them separately.

Cutest pirate treasure chest ever. The treasure inside is decent quality wish there were a few more pieces but all in all I was very pleased with the product. Small enough for kids to carry along in the car w them but big enough to hold the treasure included and some extras. Box has held up very well and it’s been played with by a boy who was 4 that’s now a 5 yr old
