We bought this for my daughter’s 3rd birthday present two years ago, and she absolutely loves this fishing toy kit. She turning 5 and still plays with it almost every other day. She loves to go “fishing,” and report back to us her catch of the day! She is truly an expert fishermen now, and loves learning all about the different species on these beautifully crafted wooden toys. This toy kit has 21-pieces of: high quality detailed wooden fish, two fishing rods, two fishing IDs, bait, fishing badge, a fishing identification card, measurer, tackle box, activity cards, net, and two water mat fishing area. The best thing? Everything fits back nicely in the carry box! No lose piece that get lost over time! My only complaint is we noticed that the fishing rod string comes undone, and falls off. Which can be a pain to rethread the fishing pole. After several times of fixing this, I decided to get our handy dandy crazy glue, I tied it, and applied a little glue to the base of the reel where the fishing string was attached. That fixed it perfectly! No more fishing line coming undone! This isn’t a dealbreaker, I would still absolutely recommend this for your little fisherman in your life! I have not heard any complaints about this gift and I don't really think a lot of people will tell another person if something about their gift was not right. That said I don't really know how to review this item, so rather, I'll just say it looked good to me before I gifted it.

Like everything made by Melissa & Doug, this set is sturdy and durable. As avid real-life fisherman, I appreciate that are much more realistic looking than most other fishing play sets, which come with an odd assortment of goofy looking cartoon fish. My 5 year old recognized the walleye, bass, & northern pike right away, having fished for them many times in real life. He also recognized the catfish from watching fishing tv shows. The only two he didn’t recognize immediately was the salmon and trout … not because they’re any less realistic looking, but because those aren’t fish he has any experience with. He loves fishing so much, and plays with this set almost every day in between real life fishing trips. He even used it as part of his Halloween costume this year! I used a rubber band to attach one of the fish to one of the poles so that it wouldn’t fall off during trick or treating and it held up beautifully. He got lots of compliments on his costume. I love all the little extra touches too — how the poles snap on to the little carrying case, so you don’t have to carry them separately, and how the line actually reels in. The little information booklet is made of a sturdy plastic material that will last forever, and even provides some ideas for games on the back. I got this for Christmas last year and was definitely too early for her to use. Now that she’s older she loves playing with it, it’s both hard and easy, but in a good way. Follow the age recommendations. Helps with hand eye coordination. Good solid wood quality like most Melissa and Doug products. Would love to fill our house with more toys like this.
