I did a lot of research on easels as this was going to be the big Christmas gift for my 4 year old. I ultimately decided to go with this one because I know Melissa and Doug products to be well made. I chose this one over the original M & D easel because I liked that this was magnetic as well. Well, it exceeded my expectations! It takes a little time, but it’s fairly easy to put together. It’s very sturdy. I’m not sure why previous reviewers said it was cheap or flimsy. I don’t see that at all. Also the chalk board works perfectly from the first use. It didn’t need to be “seasoned” like other easel chalk boards. I can see where folding it may be a bit of a nuisance, but if you don’t need to fold it regularly it shouldn’t be a problem. Wow! This easel is amazing. My son in law was so impressed that he wants to take it back home for my grandchildren. They’ve had a lot of fun painting, coloring with chalk and using the magnetic board. Just a fair warning: it took quite some time to assemble and did not include the clips shown in the instructions to hold the paper. This was easily solved with plastic clips for hanging clothes. ... show more

Update: Had this for 3 years now and it’s still great! Took a while to put together. But it’s a nice easel and easy to use once it’s all set up. It has a magnetic chalk board on one side and a dry erase board on the other side. Easy to open and close. Larger than I was imagining but it is good that it has 3 adjustable heights. I think our kitchen is just small and that’s where it is right now. The lowest height is perfect for my 2.5 year old. I bought more magnetic letters and numbers for it since all it comes with for letters is the alphabet which you can’t make many words with. I think she will get many years of use out of this easel. ... show more

    • Generally, a great unit!
Not too difficult to assemble or to add easel paper roll to, but the whole unit is very heavy so one would need to be careful when folding it to put it out of the way. Once folded flatter, it could tip over easily (and land on a child) if not leaned enough to one side. It would be helpful if the unit came with appropriate chalk and an eraser. I would have to agree with a previous reviewer, the magnets and board are very weak magnetically, so any other magnets you might want to use would probably be too heavy. Even a few of the Melissa and Doug animal magnets are too weak for their size and don't stick to any magnetic surface well. So, Melissa and Doug, what can you do to improve this magnet problem? Also, M&D, many children have more than one of a particular letter in their name. so how about a few extra commonly used letters in your alphabet set. Otherwise, this is a great unit! ... show more

I’ll start by saying assembly was an absolute nightmare! I thought it would be worth the struggle as we’ve always liked the Melissa & Doug toys and had success mostly. Well, this was an Xmas gift and we’ve had for less than 3 months. This morning my son was drawing on the white board and yelled out at the easel fell over… it broke! The wood and easel are such poor quality it just broke. See pics. He is 3.5 so not using much pressure on it, and this is a safety issue! What a waste. So disappointed. Do not buy! ... show more

I wish a tray for paints and things came with it to attach under the easel, but this is a great little item and my grandchild loves it. When he leaves my house he asks if he can take it with him. I keep it at my house for something special to do when he comes for a visit. Both sides are great. The roller with the paper works well as long as I put a little piece of masking tape to keep it secure while he paints. I just keep reusing the tape because he paints so fast. The magnetic side is also fun and has a tray to keep the magnets. It is not readily adjustable but I think it is fine for a 3-5 year old. ... show more

    • Extremely cheap quality and instructions are mislabeled
I have had this product since Christmas. My husband and I idiotically waited until Christmas Eve to put this together thinking with double brain power it will take less than an hour. Boy was I wrong. Let me start by saying, yeah it’s a great working easel. The chalk board is bright and immediately the chalk worked great. The magnets are good and stick well. The dry erase board is also good. It does that basics. HOWEVER the installation and construction was almost enough for me to return it. There where many parts that were EXTREMELY poorly made. Chips in the wood. Uneven areas. Parts that needed to manually be fixed because they weren’t properly drilled. The stickers telling me which side was up and which letter identified which part where majority in the wrong spots. I kept getting stuck and couldn’t figure out what and then it all clicked that it was backwards. EVERYTHING was backwards. The instructions it came with where also very unhelpful with identifying what was going wrong. I ended up looking up instructions and found ones that were much easier to follow. Honestly don’t waste your time. I bought it for the brand but I should’ve gone with a different one. ... show more
