  • So much fun
Platform: Nintendo Switch Edition: Standard
Great game to pick up and set down (kids). Tactics, strategy, and humor are all good. Discussing this game with a friend (who has also played it) and they called it "cute XCOM".

  • I'll go warm up my crow to eat, because man I was so wrong about this game.
Platform: Nintendo Switch Edition: Standard
When I first heard the leaks of this game described, I was aghast. I've never played the rabbids games, because they never interested me. When "Rayman's Raving Rabbids" launched on Wii, to much success, I never once even thought of playing or touching it. I saw it once, and said "Why not just release a Rayman game? I'd play that." and never once gave it another thought. So, when I heard a Mario game was coming out, I was stoked. Then I head "& Rabbids" and was very confused and disappointed. Then I saw gameplay and saw it was an XCom Style tactical game. I thought the world was playing some joke on me. But at e3 coverage, I watched, and was impressed with what I saw, so I decided to try it. It's a Mario game. It can't be bad, right? Well, I would like to apologize to Ubisoft immensely. They created a Xcom style tactical game, that is sometimes unforgiving to newcomers of the genre, and made a skillfully fun "Easy to learn, hard to master" game. I thought the Rabbids would grate on me, due to the gibberish speak, but thankfully they are not overdone, and the puns, humor, and sometimes even toilet humor actually warrants a chuckle. I'm about 15 hours in, and half way through the game, and not once have I bored from it. Battles can get intense, and make you think, and for those who are less experienced you can turn on an easy mode at any time. The bosses are creative, and the story is rather unique for a Mario game, this is not your regular save the princess style story from our red capped friend. There are 8 party members you can unlock. You start off with 3, Mario, Luigi Rabbid, and Peach Rabbid". Peach rabbid is actually very funny, in that she's always such a diva, parodying a social media obsessed teen. There are tons of mechanics in battles, it isn't simply move+shoot. The characters are all very different as well, acting as classes. Rabbid Luigi for instance, specializes in elemental damage and effects, while Luigi himself is essentially a sniper, with low HP for this reason. You can only equip 3 party members (at least, 15 hours into the game, I don't know if it changes for end game) so you have to think. If you put 3 low HP high damage characters in, you could be putting yourself at major risk. The game keeps introducing new mechanics, or new skills every hour or so, or you can unlock them every hour, and there are a surprising amount of collectable art, models, soundtrack, and gear scattered about, urging you to replay levels when you have unlocked later abilities, helping replay-ability. So far, I can't put this game down, and man, I really am going to go out and admit how wrong I was. Ubisoft proved me wrong ten fold, this game oozes quality and charm, and makes me yearn for a sequel on it, and that this trend continues, as the gameplay is something stellar. Fans of XCom, I haven't played Xcom much, so I can't say how it stacks up, however you will find that 50% in this game, actually means 50%, rather than "MISS". There is a multiplayer mode, and challenge levels, though these are unlocked later after chapter (or world) 1, so you can't team up in the main game as far as I know. For those on the fence, rent it if you need to. I want this game on my shelf, as it's a dead knockout out to me, and right now (At the time of this writing, October with Mario Odyssey is coming fast though!) second on switch only to breath of the wild in my opinion. I'm not even a tactical game fan, as I usually am really bad at them, but the learning curve is very gradual in this game, and it only punishes you if you want it to (you can dip down to easy mode at any time to bypass this, but I like the challenge in this game and I may go pick up XCom after I play through this fully. ... show more

  • Ubisoft at its core can still be fun!
Platform: Nintendo Switch Edition: Standard
Ubisoft like many other old gaming companies have become shills it seems looking at ever increasing revenue at the cost of entertainment value for the gamer playing them. But this game being a partnership with Nintendo has made it just pure classic fun. Its pretty easy to get the hang of and it follows a tactical style of gameplay that's been around already but adds some fun twists. Now I just have to get the DLC which isn't too bad and much better then "loot boxes". And the main game has been a blast this far! So if you are planning on buying the sequel but haven't played the first one yet let me, then definitely buy it physical and save big time. Highly recommended! ... show more

  • I absolutely love this game!
Platform: Nintendo Switch Edition: Standard
I absolutely love this game. I have never played anything like this, no XCOM style games, no games at all really except for just really easy stuff, games that don't require much thought, like Mario Kart. I didn't think I would like this one, but I gave it a try. I'm 37 years old if that makes a difference, but I would say that this is a family-friendly game. There is some potty-humor, some flatulence and sometimes Beep-O (the leader that looks like a robotic vacuum) has an attitude and he may swear but the swear words are in this form - #%&$! - and it only happens 2, maybe 3 times. I think that would just fly over a young child's head. There isn't any blood or gore and it's not incredibly violent - sure, you're "shooting" and blowing up characters, but it's tasteful - they just sort of disappear instead of piling up around you. Some of the puzzles are surprisingly difficult, or maybe I'm just not nearly as smart as I thought I was. I had more trouble figuring a few of those out than I would like to admit, lol. I was frustrated at first, even though looking back the game starts off incredibly easy. I just had no idea what I was supposed to be doing. It definitely gives you a chance to learn the ropes, so if you are like me and have never played this style game, you CAN easily pick it up. It does get increasingly difficult, and pretty quickly. If you are skilled at these types of games, I wouldn't worry about it being too easy altogether. Once I got the hang of it I could not put it down. I just beat the final boss last night and I was thrilled to find that there was more to the game after that - you can go back and do more things and find hidden "Ultimate Challenges". The animation is fantastic. The scenery is beautiful, the characters are adorable, the bosses are really cool. Rabbid Peach is my favorite - she's a social media obsessed diva. She's always stopping to take selfies of herself with her cell phone and when the team loses a match or challenge she yanks off her wig and crown (off camera) and throws them towards the other 2 team members. It's just really cute, I found myself laughing out loud a lot during gameplay. The soundtrack is marvelous. I have come across a couple of glitches in the game - the "A" button sometimes stops working and I can't do anything - I can bring up the menu with the "+" button but it's just scrolling through really quickly, I can't select any of the options. All I can do is close the software and start again at the last saved point. During the last few chapters of the game I had some trouble with the software closing on its own - an error message that said something like this software has encountered an error and needs to close. Hopefully, those things are fixed with future updates or patches, if that's possible. I am very happy that I went outside of my comfort zone and gave this game a try. I hope there are more like it in the future. I give it a 10 out of 10. :-) ... show more
