  • Wide array of connections and great quality for stereo / multi-zone applications
Style: NR1200
This is my first Marantz product, and after having it for about a week, I've been very impressed overall. I was looking for an AV amplifier with better-than-average sound quality to use in a stereo application setting where I would be watching TV/movies but also listening to music from a variety of sources. This does a great job and, when used with the HEOS app and supported networking capabilities, can be used for everything from podcasts / streaming services and Internet Radio to your more classic CDs, turntable, HDMI video/audio connections. The unit itself is very well-built, heavyish for its size and features top quality connections and control knobs. The display is bright / visible from across the room and will display the current source and audio type (e.g. Stereo, Auto, Direct, etc.) Once the speakers are connected, it's really up to your current setup to determine what else you'll need to plug in. I currently have connected: a TV/cable box, PS4 game console, Blu-Ray disc player, turntable, CD player and antennas for AM/FM radio. It's currently driving two stereo speakers and a subwoofer and has room for an additional 2 speakers and another subwoofer, if desired. It's really an impressive collection of power and inputs with legendary Marantz quality. The only drawbacks I'd see are if you wanted to set up a true surround sound system for home theater applications. This could probably be used well-enough for surround stereo, but for a home theater setup, you'll likely want a unit that supports 5.1 or higher speaker configuration (e.g. 7.1, 7.2, 9.1, etc.) For my purposes, though, this unit is more than sufficient and actually preferrable to a home theater setup due to space and room configuration limitations. The unit really comes to life with the addition of the HEOS app. When paired with the Marantz app (both of which you'll want to download / install), you can easily use your phone to switch to any source, whether physical or from a streaming service (Spotify, Sirius XM, iHeartRadio, Pandora, etc.). This makes it convenient to control just about any setting on the receiver without carrying around or being in close proximity to the remote. Definitely worth the investment for anyone looking to step up to better quality without completing breaking the bank, especially if you're a stereophile and don't need full home theater connectivity. ... show more

  • Great solution for small spaces!
Style: NR1200
QUICK SUMMARY: This is a wonderfully capable stereo receiver with tons of features. A few improvements would make it even better, though. BACKGROUND: I bought this receiver to replace a decades-old Yamaha receiver when I re-imagined my small home theater system. I have a very small family room with a 55" LG TV, an IKEA Hemnes TV stand, and old Bose Accoustimass speakers along with a beefy Sony powered subwoofer. WHAT I LIKE: - Great compact receiver fits in the small shelf space of my IKEA TV stand - Connected great with my new LG smart TV so when the TV turns on, the receiver turns on, too - It's easy to connect the receiver to my home WiFi using the Marantz phone app - It's easy to stream Spotify on the receiver either by using Apple AirPlay or the Marantz HEOS solution - A recent firmware upgrade permits output to Bluetooth-connected headphones - It has an Eco mode which reduces heat and power consumption without noticeably making any difference to sound - The sound quality, of course, is great to my undiscerning ear (the biggest variables of sound quality, though, are speakers and room space) - For my small family room, choosing this stereo receiver instead of the 5:1, 7:1 or similar home theater systems made sense; my non-techie wife can easily operate the familiar knobs of this Marantz stereo receiver - The Marantz phone app has a maximum volume limiter so you don't accidentally swipe the volume slider and blow your speakers! WHAT COULD BE BETTER: - I wish the receiver had a Loudness button (changing the Bass setting isn't the same) - I wish it had a sensitivity setting to change how sensitive the volume knob is; it takes a lot of turning to make a difference in volume - Sometimes Spotify inexplicably stops playing when using the Marantz HEOS connection. I haven't had a similar problem when using Apple AirPlay - The mobile app could still be improved. For example, the volume slider is imprecise and too easy to accidentally raise the volume beyond what you wanted. CONCLUSION: This Marantz receiver was an essential piece to the puzzle of building a new entertainment system in my family room. I'm very glad I bought it and would buy it again if I went back in time with the knowledge I have gained from using it. Recommended! ... show more

  • High quality. Exactly what I needed.
Style: NR1200
62 year old brand loyalist. Have owned a 2235b or a 2220b for 46 years. You hipsters ever hear about loyalty? Finally gave in and got this NR1200 because I wanted a 2 channel system that could do 'everything', vinyl, DVD, HEOS etc. Also replaced my 36 year old ESM speakers with KLH Model 3's and a Klipsch subwoofer. It's been a pain in my saggy a** to adapt, connect, work the remotes, etc. But it's been a religious experience. I'm not technical enough or an audiophile to comment or say something like " the bones are the same" or it has the 'Marantz sound'. KLH is is not the same KLH of my youth. However, the system I am putting together sounds incredible. Warm, non-fatiguing, detailed and yeah, a much larger 'soundstage' where I am hearing so much more. Glad I waited because dammit, I got my money's worth with my old stuff and it will be the same with this new rig. Have to replace my turntable and that is proving to be really difficult to choose. The NR1200 feels substantial. It's heavy for its slim size. Back panel is well organized. It now seems intuitive but it's taken several sessions. Bass and treble controls are nice. You make your component selection with the large left dial. Volume on the right, The remote is fantastic and interaction with a flat screen is nice. Graphic display on the TV seems a little primitive. (Font is like on your old Atari.) But navigation is fine. Apparently this model is discontinued. And well, relatively soon, so will I. ... show more
