The mantle itself is very nice looking and well built but the wood cleat u stick on the wall is this tiny little thing that is very difficult for the mantle to grab hold of if your wall is natural, uneven stone. Would have been nice if the cleat was bigger, thicker, deeper so that even if your wall isn't so square, there is still enough cleat for the mantle to grab hold of. If it's off by just a smidge, the cleat and overhang on the inside of the mantle don't line up properly, or at all, and you won't be able to screw into both the mantle and cleat to make them one and secure it to the wall. The cleat is this very narrow sliver of wood. My wall required me to put various shims behind the wooden cleat so that the stone would not get in the way of the mantle and prevent the two wooden surfaces from mating evenly. I even had to chisel the rock a bit in one spot. If it was a bigger cleat, sticking out from the wall further, there would be more surface area for the mantle to rest/hang on and get the screws into. Looks nice, just took a lot of work on my end. I was about to make my own cleat out of a bigger piece of wood, but it worked out and looks nice. If you are mounting on a sheetrock wall, u won't have this problem and it will be a breeze. ... show more

Very nice mantel. Sturdy and easy to install. I have ordered the Mocha Color F.Y.I. The wood finish is not totally in line with the picture showed for this color, but I like a lot what I have received: it gives a more modern touch.

    • Nice Mantel. Poor Installation Instructions. Unacceptable Hardware.

I purchased a new mantel for my fireplace. The mantel came in a timely manner and was constructed well enough, though I found it to have a more mass-produced look than the description suggested. Once installed, it did look nice. That, however, is where the positives ended. The instructions provided were not clear. Yes, it was clear to screw the wooden cleat to the wall, but what wasn't clear was what screws to use. The instructions simply said (use proper screws). The problem is the mantel came with 1.25 inch and 3.5 inch screws. Additionally, the wooden cleat didn't come with pre-drilled holes, but that was not that big of an issue. The worst part, however, was the screws themselves. When going to attach the cleat, I drilled the holes in the studs as required, but when the second screw was a little over 3/4 in, the screwhead snapped off, and I was stuck with a broken screw in my wall that stuck out less than a 1/4 of an inch. Needless to say, I was pretty upset, and it took some time to get the cleat off the wall again. Due to this, I had to go out and purchase new screws that were better quality, and I had to redo the entire process. I obviously couldn't have the mantel at the same height I wanted, so I had to raise it about 6 inches. It wasn't too terrible, but I was still annoyed. Due to the screws being unacceptable, I purchased high quality finishing screws to screw the mantel to the cleat (as the directions said to do) because I wasn't going to risk another screw breaking. While the mantel may look nice, it is unlikely I will purchase another piece from this seller again, and I will advise friends and family not to do so as well. ... show more
