Description

Style:MVDDA2 Control your Nikon or Canon DSLR from the Digital Director for iPad Air 2 from Manfrotto. The Digital Director is an advanced tether solution comprised of three main components: a user-supplied iPad, an Apple Certified Digital Director iPad holder with a built-in microprocessor, and the Digital Director App. These three components work together seamlessly to provide you with control over your camera's still and video functions right from the iPad. The heart of the Digital Director is the iPad holder which is customized to securely fit the iPad Air 2 and features a lock to prevent accidental release. The iPad slips into the holder and the Lightning connector provides communication between the iPad and the built-in ARM Cortex A8 600 MHz microprocessor, and a USB cable connects the unit to the camera. The processor allows for real-time live view monitoring when shooting stills or videos, as well as fast download speeds when transferring full size JPEGs from the camera's memory card to the iPad.

  • This is a total waste of money.
Style: MVDDM23
I purchased this item just recently and right out of the box I had an issue with the item. The ability to zoom in/out to confirm accurate focus just does not work with a darn. I am shooting a canon 5dmkiv and the lens on at the time was a canon 24-70ii L series (which of course has AF option) I could not zoom in...period...I read the manual and it wasn't helpful at all. Then I noticed that as I clicked on the live view screen to focus at certain points, the marker to show where you clicked would move around and jump around from point to point. mind you it only moves .25 to .5 inches on the iPad screen, but that's a huge difference when your subject is 5, 10, 15 or more feet away from you. .25-.5 on the iPad turns into 5 feet, etc on the image. So while you try to focus on the person's eyes, the device actually will focus 20 feet behind the person on a damn tree. Then, I walked away thinking it was just new to me and I had to figure it out. So I waited about an hour and came back to it, sat down turned everything on in the order it suggests and the DD would not connect to my camera. A message is displayed that streaming is not working and that you should reset your camera, your iPad or your DD and ensure that the cables are connected properly. Really? It really shouldn't matter what order the items are turned on, but I did it anyway. Tried several times, unplugged and plugged the cable, still wouldn't connect. I have several manfrotto tripods, monopods and various heads and I like them for the price. I don't know if this was manfrotto's first attempt at this tech or what, but they definitely screwed the pooch on this pile of garbage. Already requested a return label and this junk is heading back immediately ... show more

  • User friendly and oh so Useful!
Style: MVDDA2
I love my new Digital Director! As my photography and videogrpahy hobbies have become obessesions I've realized I'll need a second job to afford the equipment and the many accesssories I want. Manfrotto's products have always served me well on set and off. This Director has given me the ability to turn my iPad into a control and monitor, making it nuch easier to evaluate my shots on the spot and make adjustments. They also make a sunhood for daytime shooting and a carrying case. The whole pacakge still comes in at a fraction of the price you'd pay for a monitor and control set up. Next investment, lighting! I cannot wait to set up a photobooth and have the ability to manage my lighting and camera settings simultaneously. ... show more

  • Great Tethered Shooting Solution
Style: MVDDA2
Overall, product works well and really makes portrait shooting much easier to verify focus! It gives you full control of your camera from your iPad including touch focus, shutter release, aperture, shutter speed, ISO. The plastic seems a little cheap relative to the cost. It sometimes glitches out and needs to be shut down and reset. I would recommend this product as a solution for tethered shooting. ... show more

  • Great add on to my kit, lets me see what I'm doing
Style: MVDDA2
This is a great tool. Using this with my Canon DSLR, I can compose much better on the large screen of my iPad. I can touch to focus. I have been playing with the intervalometer and time lapse features. Pretty easy to set up. Seems like all the controls of the camera are there in the app. Very useful. ... show more

  • Three Stars

It is okay, but limited in what camera controls it actually works with. Needs more, in my opinion.

  • Manfrotto’s Elegant Tethering Solution
Style: MVDDA2
For years our studio has used a number of different tethered monitors. In a short time the Digital Director has become my favorite of the bunch. The only problem I had was at first set-up, which was the result of not reading the manual (who does that with an iOS product anymore?). Seems there’s a small black power button on the back of the Digital Director that needs to be switched on. If it’s not, a “Not Streaming” alert comes up on your iPad that prompts you to check different connections first. Seems this may have been a problem for previous reviewers too; it’s easy to miss for the first time. Thankfully it was a simple fix and from then on it’s been smooth sailing. The iOS interface makes navigation familiar, robust and productive; even found other features while playing around. Two features I was very happy to find were Focus Peaking and Zebra Filter , which we used a lot with our Marshall HDMI monitors. iPad apps and connectivity via the Wi-Fi, Cell Data or AirPlay really extends versatility for us too. Although our intended use is primarily product and portrait photography, I definitely see myself taking this out of the studio for other types of photography, like landscape, architecture, time lapse and video. Seems very well built and is certainly portable enough. In closing, I’m very pleased with the Digital Director thus far, so aside from the initial set-up issue (my bad), I give the Digital Director 4.5 Stars, mainly because I don’t give out 5’s. ... show more
