I'm about a 34/36 waist I got a large cause that's what I usually am and they were just slightly tight. I probably would have been more comfortable in an XL. The material is thin, and if that's what you're looking for in athletic shorts then these are fine. Personally I like my shorts a bit thicker so they aren't quite as revealing.
