Format: Paperback
I now have 5 of Johanna's books, so I would say that I am definitely a fan of her work. While I do enjoy the intricate details in many of her coloring book pages, I also appreciate the larger areas of Magical Jungle. The pictures are beautiful and will be fun to color. The pages are printed on both sides on lovely creamy paper vs the brillant white in some. Each page is quite thick as are all her books. As the thickness of the book can cause one to have hands awkwardly angled when working around the outer edges of the page, I use another of her books to rest my hand upon. The pictures to go from edge of the page directly to the crease. The 2 page spreads can be difficult unless you break the binding. This is easily done for most. As always, Johanna as included hidden items throughout the book. There are 14 double page spreads & 34 single page pictures. Towards the back is each picture in miniature that show which hidden items are where. There is also a color palette page & 4 bonus pages on perforated single sides! I found the following : Both wax & oil pencils work nicely with easy blending, depending on the brand of pencils used. I used Prismacolor wax pencils & Hero oil pencils & I also used my Artist Choice pencils, which are a harder wax pencil and they worked very well. All layered well. Pastels, the chalky type by Mungyo adhered very well to the pages for background. Remember to use this generally with the oil pencils, as oil will repell the pastel from changing the colors of your coloring. I lightly shave pastels along the outer areas and gently move the color into the smaller areas blending the pastels gently into the overall picture. It can be quite lovely. Gel pens work nicely, but some inks could possibly bleed through. Permanent maker will shadow through. Be sure you have no plans to color the page behind & use cardstock or several pieces of copy paper to protect other pages. I use cardstock behind every page I color. I used Pitt Pens to embellish my pages &there was no bleed through. These are India Ink, brush tipped pens. A dream to work with, &fantastic for making your pictures pop. If you decide to do a black background, the Pitt pens will leave dark shadows, so again be sure you do not want to do the picture behind! Watercolor pencils work very well, but beware of using too much water. These pages can buckle, but using water sparingly can prevent this from happening. Water based markers work well. There can be minor bleed through &pilling of the paper if you try using too much of the markers in 1 place. Layering with these types of markers are not recommended by me,but others may know how to make them work differently for them. For a wonderful YouTube video review or tutorials with Johanna's books, look for Peta Hewitt, La Artistino! She is amazing &I enjoyed the tutorials I have done. As Peta says, "happy coloring! • Attention Creatives!
Format: Paperback
My first adult coloring book. This was the first coloring book I ever saw featured in Barnes and Noble, Target, Walmart, all over Pinterest, and Amazon too, it was catching my attention EVERYWHERE, I had to have it! Johanna's coloring books have opened up so much inspiration and creativity in me! I plan on owning all of them one day, right now I currently own two: MAGICAL JUNGLE and LOST OCEAN. Check out the hashtag #magicaljungle on the internet for inspiration, which was a note in the coloring book, what a GREAT idea on the illustrator's part!! —Another great hashtag to search for is the author's name: #johannabasford and her other coloring book: #lostocean There are some amazing artists out there! Exploring different styles through her affiliated hashtags I mentioned above, has helped me determine what new styles I'd like to try out myself. I'm growing artistically, just from seeing multiple versions of the same illustration, done by varying people! Things that would make this coloring book pure perfection: 1. If the illustrations wouldn't be back to back, even though the paper is thick. 2. If the pages were perforated, to tear out and hang up with ease. On the plus side... • Gorgeous and I mean gorgeous, well-done, clean lines, illustrations • Thick paper • I love all the negative space so I can practice making really neat backgrounds surrounding all the animals • Nice variation of animals and plants • I look forward to using gold leaf foil or silver leaf foil on the paper for extra embellishments, just as they did on the cover! Beautiful! Kids would also enjoy this, there is a hidden objects game that can be played throughout as an added fun bonus. Whether you want to participate in that or not, is up to you! As you can see, these can be made into works of art, so much more than just your average coloring books! ... show more

  • Love it!
Format: Paperback
I originally said this ranked with Secret Garden as one of my favorites; however after now using it more, I would say I like it better! I love the floral designs, and since shading flowers and leaves are my favorite to color, I'm in heaven with this book. Combine those with the great animal drawings and you've got a fantastic book! I may have to order a second one just for me, so I can share this one with the grandkids! My other bit of feedback would be about the paper. I love a book with a heavier paper, which this has; however most of Johanna's books have a smoothness too them, that makes it hard blending almost anything other than my Prismacolors (and I even have Staedtler who she promotes). I have a number of sets from Holbein, Pablos, Polychromos, Lyra, Derwent, etc., and have had my periodic challenges with all of them. When you love to color, no matter how long you've been doing it or your experience with pencils, you want to enjoy your time and the outcome of your work. With the touch I use when I color, I find I like a harder pencil when I color in her books, yet I've been coloring the last couple of pages with my Derwent ColorSoft, and Inktense. My set of Mitsubishi Uni have also worked well on the pages. A big plus for this particular book is the paper. It seems thicker than the others, and handles damp brushes for light watercoloring. I have been able to use my Inktense pencils and easily blend with a damp brush. Since I'm not using lots of water, I haven't had any paper warping. The drawings are lovely and once again, Johanna has outdone herself. I can hardly wait for her next book to come out, and hope the paper will be on this same type of thick quality. Keep up the beautiful artwork Johanna, it's so delightful!!! ... show more

  • I got this to make for my son so far he loves it
Format: Paperback
But the person that mentioned leaves is right. My god there are so many leaves. I had to buy a cheapo colored pencil set bc i am not wasting, yes wasting, my nice pencils on a billion leaves. I tried to do the route of not all leaves are green for 'creativity' but really I was just trying to not burn through all my green pencils that were expensive. It does look nice have a variety of leaf colors but then again, I am still wasting nice pencils on endless leaves which are not my least favorite thing in the world. I would rather expend my colors on something more inspiring like animals, rivers or flowers etc. Despite all this its still a 5 star as my son loves to watch me color and he scribbles on his own little pad with me while I do this. This book alone has taught him to say and learn colors and various animals. He will point to what I am working on and I say what it is and he says it back to me. He is speech delayed so this really helps him make connections with images and language. I did find another efficient way to do leaves in this book. Watercolor pencils. Now, derwent inktense doesnt bleed to the other side of the page, most of the time, as long as you dont layer too much. But they are $$$$ and the inktense was a gift so if I didn't have these I would still use regular watercolor pencils or the inexpensive pencils so I was lucky with inktense in that regard. i tried other water color pencils and they look nice too but they dont have the opacity that inktense does. Inktense performs okay on this paper i have to work very hard to get the lines to soften when i activate the ink with water which can lead to ghosting on the other side. YMMV ... show more

  • Great if you really love coloring leaves...lots and lots of leaves Great if you really love coloring leaves...lots and lots of leaves
Format: Paperback
I work from home and spend a lot of time in meetings. I find that coloring while listening helps me pay attention to boring meeting discussions. Regarding this particular coloring book, the paper quality is great and the images are nicely done. There just wasn't enough variety for me. I get that it's jungle themed but, man, are there a lot of leaves to color. So. Many. Leaves. There are only a handful of pages that didn't include a significant amount of leaves. I quickly grew bored of leaves and will probably only complete 10% of the book. That said, I appreciate the talent of the artist and the price was very reasonable. ... show more

  • Magical Jungle Perfection Magical Jungle Perfection
Format: Paperback
I have two other books from her collection, but I must admit this is the first I have colored the most pages in so far. The paper is excellent, thick quality much like all her other books. The theme itself is one you will not find anywhere else I don't think. Johanna has easily captures this theme so wonderfully through her drawings: Birds, monkeys, snakes, elephants and even to fish and so on. I've had so much fun bringing to life each page I have had colored so far. I should mention I do have the US edition and love that there is no dust jacket. The enchanted forest comes with one and I find it hard to color with one and put away as it moves around up and down. One thing I do love that this book offers that her earlier books do not, is a test page as well as the last few perforated pages in the back of the book. Being able to test your mediums on the actual paper in the book before using them is a great thing. Also, I love that there is not as many tiny details in this one in comparison to her last book lost ocean and there is more open wider areas. The double pages don't run into the crease-center of the book which is another positive thing. I found that hard, if not impossible in her other books I own. As far as mediums I've used so far I have only used two and that is prismacolor premier colored pencils and marco raffine. Both work absolutely great on the paper of this book and blend very easily, especially the prismas. Overall, I'm a very happy adult coloring customer and am enjoying this book so far. Would easily recommend this one to anyone who is a fan of her work or looking for a great new adult coloring book to try. ... show more
