I actually bought this backpack on a whim because we had an extended trip planned in the blazing Florida heat, and it was crucial to keep things cold for our family's enjoyment. Lately, I've noticed a surge in the popularity of backpack-style coolers, so I thought it might be the solution we needed. If you've ever looked into backpack coolers, you know there are numerous brands and styles available at different price points. Initially, I had my sights set on some well-known brands, but the timing and cost didn't align. That's when I came across the offerings from Maelstrom. Let me start by saying I absolutely love the size of this backpack. During a recent outing, I easily packed four 32 oz stainless steel water bottles, a couple of cans of sparkling water, two bottles of Prime, two additional frozen water bottles, and a sack of food with fruit. I didn't even have to be strategic with my packing, thanks to the ample space in the bag, and everything stayed intact especially the fruit. One of the standout features of this bag is the abundance of pockets. Since we planned on being active outdoors, it often meant my shorts lacked the capacity to hold all the essentials like my phone, wallet, and keys. However, with this backpack, that concern was alleviated. There are pockets everywhere, easily accessible and within reach. What's more, there's even a hidden zipper pocket on the backside, which proved invaluable for keeping important items secure when navigating through crowds. Considering the amount of stuff I packed, the bag did get quite heavy. Thankfully, the straps are remarkably comfortable. They never dug into my shoulders, no matter the weight of the bag. Plus, there's a chest strap that adds an extra level of security. The only thing I wish it had, if possible, would be a waist strap or belt to make long carries even more comfortable. In terms of style, this bag blends in seamlessly with other backpacks. It doesn't scream "I'm a cooler" and lacks prominent branding that draws unnecessary attention. This discreet design makes it convenient and less awkward to carry anywhere and everywhere. Now, let's talk about its performance as a cooler. It fares pretty well, to be honest. Are there better coolers out there? Yes. Do I own some of them? Definitely. However, I subjected this bag to scorching 105°F heat for a full five hours, and everything inside stayed impressively cold. Towards the end, there was a slight warming effect, but I must admit, I didn't have the best ice packs at my disposal. Overall, I'm genuinely pleased with this purchase. It may not boast a widely recognized brand name, but the Maelstrom backpack cooler performs exceptionally well, especially considering its attractive price point. This cooler replaced on old one of about the same size but which had a shoulder strap rather than being a backpack. I haven't had a chance to test its limits yet but the few times it has been used, it has performed as expected. The backpack style is a definite plus, leaving hands free and avoiding shoulder pain. The cooler has plenty of pockets with and without zippers so one can keep various items separate. This is about the right size for its style as you would hardly want to carry a larger cooler on your back. For those times get one with wheels. I bought this backpack about eighteen months ago and have dragged this thing to more caves, rivers, and resorts than I can count, it’s been my go to cooler anytime I wanted to bring beers and sandwiches on a day trip. It’s super easy to carry, I love the padding on the back to help insulate me from the bag while I’m carrying it, the fact that it has a bottle opener and a whistle on the front is pretty cool too. It has a few different compartments to keep things organized and the orange color made it easy to spot anytime I left it somewhere. The only negative I can say about it is that it has started leaking recently but for the cheap price I can’t be mad, it’s lasted through a whole lot of fun times! ... show more

the opening is good with enough structure to make in/our convenient. the starps are comfortable and have good qadjustment and the mesh pocket etc are nice I actually use mine to kayak out and empty my crab pots (so the shoulder straps fit over my PFD and I'm not small) and the top opening well AND securing is important (If I can get and keeps grabs in there..you can get your beers in and out easilly) ... show more

A lot of space for not a huge bag. I know it doesn’t make sense…I’m 5’6” and I can wear it and not like like a 3rd grader. I’ve taken this bag everywhere- kayaking, trail riding , Atv creek riding, ball games…etc. Excellent construction and plenty of pockets for whatever you need with you. The best part is NO leaks. I returned two other backpacks to Walmart because of leaks and I decided to try Amazon. I’m glad I found this backpack. I filled it full of drinks and food- filled the rest with ice and the backpack didn’t end up soaked on the outside. I got this for my partner for Christmas and he LOVES it. The size is large enough to hold a brown paper grocery bag and keeps his food cold all day. Throw your lunch and some drinks for the day in the bag with an ice pack and get moving. It's easy to wipe out when it gets messy, lots of pockets for various treasures. This cooler keeps my lunch cold up to the time I eat it. This is why I bought it, so purpose served. The only issue I have is that there isn’t a hardened shell inside the cooler to mitigate the possibility of puncturing the lining, which is made of stuff that, if any type of solid pointy object were placed inside, would poke right thru it. It should be noted that there are compartments for things like forks and knives, so if an eating utensil punctures the inner lining, you have no one to blame but yourselves. The rest of this bag is sturdy and the straps used for carrying on long hikes or just going into work are strong. As long as you don’t plan on filling the mapping compartment with shards of glass and razor blades, you won’t find a problem with this product. ... show more
