Description

Stewart Holbrook writes about America as few others do, recreating with warm, human detail the lives of men who helped hew our country out of the wilderness. he has concentrated his knowledge and his talent on an important aspect of our national life -- the American rural scene and the farmer who feeds the nation and a good part of the giant farms of the West, the revolution in farm machinery and methods, as well as in the farmer's life -- these are the elements of one of America's greatest achievements. • Book information...
This is the SECOND PRINTING Revised Edition of this book, with co-author Richard Charlton (their Director of Communications) supplementing the original 1955 version with updated information up until 1976. From the preface: "The volume of requests for historical information which reaches the Case corporate offices documents a keen and continuing interest in the origins of our machines of plenty and in the people who have made them. During America's Bicentennial Year, it is therefore particularly appropriate to publish this comprehensive history of the Case Company. The J I Case story is presented in two parts. The first portion is a reprinting of Stewart H. Holbrook's Machines of Plenty, a book originally published in 1955. Mr. Holbrook's narrative history of the Case Threshing Machine Company tells a good deal about Jerome Increase Case and the company he founded, and sheds some light on the evolution of agricultural tools, farming methods, and the social and economic impact of industrialization on the farm equipment business. Part II is an addendum to the Holbrook work, authored by Richard G. Charlton, recounting Case Company history since 1955. It was during this period that J I Case underwent momentous change in responding to post-World War II economic and technological developments of unprecedented proportions around the world. The literary approach in Part I - a commentary dwelling on the early leadership of the Company - is succeeded in Part II by a review of the past 21 eventful years, which focuses on the development of the Company as a whole in a growing America, rather than on corporate leaders. In all, the book recounts the major innovations, problems, and accomplishments of the J I Case Company, from 1842 to 1976. We hope that you will find it interesting and informative. Thomas J. Guendel President and Chief Executive Officer J I Case Company July 1976 ... show more
