This Louisville Ladder Attic Ladder has a 30-minute fire resistance rating which complies with typical residential building codes and provides about the same fire resistance as standard gypsum board drywall. I was able to install it myself in my garage in a day and a half. I am quite happy with the ladder. It is easy to operate. It pulls down, folds up, and retracts perfectly. There is no wobble or sway, and it feels stable putting my 200+ lbs. on it. The ladder is easy to climb and has a nice handhold on the upper section, but it feels a little narrow at the top where the support arms and pistons are located. (Louisville Ladder sells wider attic ladders, but you may have to do some extensive modification of your ceiling joists and trusses to fit them). The folded ladder's dimensions are 53.5 inches long and 21.5 inches wide. The assembly weighs 36 lbs. The exposed face of the ladder is made of plywood that has been treated with a fire-retardant chemical. The folding aluminum ladder has three segments. Two gas pistons provide the spring force to retract the ladder back into its housing. You will need some supplies that are not included to install the ladder. Those include: 2 x 4 lumber and hardware to frame the rough enclosure (2) 1 x 4 x 32-inch support boards (4) Wood screws, 2.5 inch Shims The tools I used included ladders, tape measure, drill, oscillating multi-tool (to cut drywall and trim shims), table saw (to cut lumber for enclosure), 7/16-inch ratchet wrench, screwdriver, mallet, nippers. Read the instructions carefully and completely before you do anything. They are complete and reasonably well written, though some of the illustrations, like where to attach a temporary metal support strap aren't the clearest. The instructions say two people are required for installation, which is definitely true if you are using your existing attic opening for the ladder. If you are putting the ladder in a new opening, you can do it yourself by using your old opening to get up and down from the attic during installation. The ladder requires a 54 x 22-inch rough opening framed by 2 x 4s. The 22-inch-wide opening is exactly the spacing between standard 24-inch center-on-center spaced attic trusses. Installing the ladder requires screwing two temporary support boards under the ceiling opening and resting the ladder upon those supports so you can position, shim, and secure the ladder with lag screws to the rough enclosure. The ladder I received had two dents in the aluminum frame which were probably incurred during shipping (see photo). I didn't feel they would compromise the function of the ladder, so I went ahead with the installation. I can easily see delivery personnel man handling or dropping the large 46 lbs. box so it would behoove Louisville Ladder to include some protective packing material around the ladder where currently there is only the shipping box). Louisville Ladder has been in operation since 1946. They have a good reputation for quality products. Their headquarters and distribution center is in Louisville.
