  • Functional for the price
Style: Deck Box Size: 130 Gallon Color: Desert Sand/Brown
Haven't been this quick to write a review needless to say I really like this product right off the bat. I got this a couple of days ago and put it together yesterday. Being a new pool owner we needed something to put some of the pool items away from the elements. This seemed to me a good choice as far as size and price. It is plastic which I'm not really a fan of the look but for the most part we just needed it to be functional. I bought a cover to go over it which keeps it water proof and it actually doesn't look that bad. I have put together many, MANY things, from exercise equipment to shelves to desk etc over the years. Obviously this is a box not much else to say it should be easy to put together. With the way they design these things and the hardware that you get to hold it all together it seems that it wouldn't be very durable. All the bolts screw into the plastic but all the joints and lid seemed to match up and seem solid. As long as you don't over-tighten the bolts all is good. Having all the sockets and box wrenches helped, a decent tool box like the Stanley 145 piece set from Walmart that I bought a while back was really handy I used it more here that I have since I bought it. All the panels are light weight and easy to move around it says that you need a rubber mallet I didn't have to use it all the piece easily fit together with a little force. The hinges have a very simple air cylinder that seems to work well, I would say that would be something to see how long it last but it does seem solid and the hinge as a whole works well. Overall it very easy to put together with the proper tools and seems like it will last. When you put it together as the instructions say you put the walls together first and then work on the lid and hinges. If you put the lid on the box walls it will get it off the ground to make it easier to work on, just a tip. Also when putting on the hinges the lid will not stay up if you don't have someone to help hold it up you could use a wall to prop it up. Now the size. This was the largest box I could find for the cheapest amount of money. We don't have a lot stored in the box. In all we have two fold up gravity chairs, three pool noodles, goggles, snorkels, diving rings and two pool floating chairs that are full of air but can fold up enough to shove in there. The goggles and small stuff doesn't take up that much space so there is room to put a few more small stuff. The chairs have to be leaning to the side to put the lid down but the noodles go in the little void they make. It's pretty easy to get what you need in there, it's not a lot but enough to keep things protected and out of the sun and rain. My pool and that side of my house faces south so it's in the sun all day. Any chair or items lying around with no protection will get baked. We have a large pad of concrete around the pool coming up to the house so there was plenty of room to set the box next to the house with no issues being in the way. If you have a deck around your pool or are placing this inside a garage it's about the size of a large freezer chest so it will take up some room. Along with buying this is I bought the cover to go over the top of it to make it water proof. I'm sure that this box would be water resistant but not to sure if it would keep out a heavy rain. The cover was $30 which in total still makes it cheaper than the rubbermaid box that is the same size. The cover is a perfect fit and with drawstrings on both sides and elastic at the bottom so it will stay on. In all I would highly recommend this box for storage and would also recommend getting the cover if you need it to be water proof. This could also be used as a table or a bar like area to put your spread of food. Overall this was a great purchase for our needs at a great price. ... show more

  • Inconsistent Injection Molding
Style: Deck Box Size: 130 Gallon Color: Desert Sand/Brown
Updated review: Changed from 3 to 4 stars. I finally got the front panel tabs to insert but it was a struggle and the tabs which were very soft (see below) are in pretty bad shape. The rest of the install went well with no problems. But for the cost, I still expect a better a better engineered product. The video of the assembly seems very clear and very easy. However shortly into the assembly of my box I found that the box being assembled in the video was certainly not typical of mine. The back panel did go into the floor panel although with some difficulty. The front panel was a totally different matter. I quickly discovered that the bottom edge and the tabs on the front panel were very poorly injection molded (see photos). After trying to insert the panel unsuccessfully I discovered that the tabs were so poorly injection molded that they were thin enough for me to deform them with my fingers and the bottom edge of the panel had split open. I had to give up at this the second step in the assembly. I have decided that I will just resort to re-engineering the bottom of the panel and will probably assemble it with bolts. I only hope I don't run into more of the same with the rest of the assembly. ... show more

  • Good box, bad instructions, and minor design faults.
Style: Deck Box Size: 130 Gallon Color: Desert Sand/Brown
I'm pretty handy and the Lifetime box took most of the handyness to put together. A few suggestions to make it easier. 1. Check the nuts, screws, and bolts first and make sure you have the correct wrenches. A small rachet wrench (1/4" drive) will make it a lot easier to install some of the screws as at times there is not enough clearance to use a large rachet. An electric drill with a 1/4" bit will prove invaluable when installing the top to the box as the holes in the hinge do not light up exactly with the holes in the plastic box. At that point drill through the metal hinge into the plastic box AFTER making sure the hinge is in the correct position. You might have wondered why the instruction suggest a large rubber mallet. It is to drive the hinges into position. If you don't do that, good luck getting it together so the lid fits. When installing the lid stiffener, the screws are very tight and if you don't have an exact fit socket it will slip on the screw head. To make it easier to install those screws I drilled a 1/8" hole in the plastic. This was especially handy on one of the holes as the stiffener holes was undersized and the screw was very difficult to start until it got some bite in the plastic. Hint on installing the stiffener bar. The instructions make out that this is easy, but it is easy only for a 400 pound gorilla. I am just a 159 pound machinist, so Lifetimes approach did not work for me. There are two approaches that i found that should work, although the first is untested. A: Grind or cut 1/8" off of both ends of the stiffener. Examination of the lid indicates that the ends of the stiffener do not provide any function when installed and appear to be free floating in a chamber of the lid. The bar should install easily, if not take a little more off each end. Do not just cut one end, keep the bar symmetrical. B: Get a buddy who can work in a team and follow this procedure: 1. Place the lind top down on a flat surface on top of a pad. 2. trial fit the bar and find the end that fits the best (i.e. the bar fits in the slot and snugly in the channel). Now insert the OTHER end into its slot. Call that the FIRST END. 2. Position your buddy on the lid, 1/3 of the way in from the FIRST END. 3. Position yourself at the OTHER END and fasten a Locking Pliers to the stiffener near the end of the wide part of the stiffener. 4. Grab the stiffener with your right hand about 18 inches from the end while your buddy grabs it about 1/3 the distance from the FIRST END. 5. Both of you then pull the stiffener toward yourself. The buddy's job is to put enough bow in the stiffener to allow it to go into the slot. Your job is to make sure the bow is only in your buddy'e end and to use the locking pliers to line the end of the stiffener with the slot it is to enter. 6. When the stiffener is aligned with the slot slowly release the tension on the stiffener and guide it into the slot. With mine it took a whang from the rubber mallet to finish off the job. 7. Then use the mallet to drive the stiffener so it is centered in the lid. Failure to do this will result in the stiffener screws being misaligned in the lid and seriously compromising the strength of the lid. When installing the hinges in the lid use the mallet to align the hinge with the lid. The small rachet is handy for installing the 4 screws. If you overtighten you will rip the plastic and the screw will not work. When installing the hinges on the box it takes a lot of mallet work to do the alignment. Once aligned use the 1/4" drill to as mentioned above, then insert the bolt from the plastic side. Note: a socket wrench or box end wrench will not work on the bolt, an open end wrench is required as the designers of the box made a major fopa on this part of the design. A rachet wrench works great on the nut. It's together, the fit is good, and it looks nice. Just wish it was easier to assemble and the instruction were a lot more detailed. ... show more
