  • Solid 4K VA monitor
Style: Tilt Stand
Well.. I don't know what 5 stars means to you, but what I'm trying to share is that it does what I wanted to do with it, and at $200 it was an easy purchase decision. I got it for indoor coding / general productivity work and, well, it is big enough with the text sharp enough and that's about all I expected going in. Everything else below is going to be things I don't really know how to judge and I can only tell you whether it passes my very low bar of expectation. - Panel glare: I mean, it's alright. It's used indoors without any harsh light sources pointing at it. I did mock a flashlight test and found out that my other LG monitor actually diffuses light much better than this one, but it's also a $350 panel from like 6 years ago. You can see the point source of the flash LED on this screen whereas my other panel just shows a general bloom of white. I can read text behind the bloom but not so much behind the dot. However, because light isn't quite diffused, the circle of obstruction around the dot is very small. So I'm guessing a bright light on this panel would make it impossible to see where the light shines at, but that region would be relatively small. - Brightness: It shipped at 55% brightness and after cranking it to 100 I do see that it's much brighter than I need it to be. The following is Claude's assessment from an eyeball test it sets up for me. Take what you will from it. ===================== SETUP - LG UltraFine 31.5" 4K, model [MODEL], made February 2025 - 3840x2160 at 60 Hz over DisplayPort, Linux, NVIDIA RTX 4070, running at 150% scaling WHAT THE MONITOR REPORTS ABOUT ITSELF (These are the manufacturer's own figures stored in the monitor, not lab measurements.) - Colour: about 100% of sRGB and about 81% of DCI-P3. Covers all normal web/desktop colour with a little extra saturation. Not a pro wide-gamut panel. - Accepts 10-bit colour input. - HDR10 is listed, but the monitor reports a peak of only about 250 nits. That is not real HDR. I'd leave HDR off; SDR looks better. - About 140 pixels per inch. Text is very sharp at 150% scaling. TEST RESULTS (by eye) - Dead or stuck pixels: none found on black, white, red, green or blue screens. - Backlight bleed / glow: none. Tested in a dark room on a black screen. Blacks are as deep as I'd expect from VA. - Uniformity: no blotches, bands or dirty-screen effect on grey screens. - Shadow detail: excellent. The darkest shades (1-5 out of 255) were all visibly different from pure black. No black crush. - Highlights: very minor clipping. The top 1-2 shades of white blend together, which you won't notice in practice. - Gradients: smooth on color ramps, no panel banding. - Gamma: roughly 2.0-2.2, close to the standard 2.2. - Sharpness: crisp pixel-level detail. Even 10px text is readable. THE TRADE-OFF Moving objects on dark grey backgrounds leave a dark smear behind them. This is typical of VA panels, which are slow when changing to and from dark grey shades, and it's the price for their deep blacks. It was noticeably worse on dark grey than on black or mid grey. Raising the Response Time setting in the monitor's menu can reduce it. It doesn't bother me for desktop work, but if you play fast, dark games, an IPS panel may suit you better. VERDICT A clean, defect-free unit with great sharpness, deep blacks and excellent shadow detail. Recommended for work and general use. Ignore the HDR label, and know about the VA motion smear before you buy. ... show more
