So, just this past month, I had some fairly good foot swelling to deal with, and I have to tell you, I had such a time trying to get a proper cold application, and the associated relief. Cold gel packs, as nice as they are and so convenient, simply aren't anywhere near as good as ice in temp, and don't maintain that cold very well at all. It bleeds out all too quickly. Regular ice packs are not something I keep on hand, and suspect they aren't necessarily cost effective in the long run. Ice bags are really not user friendly, not being very malleable. Great for applying to a forehead, but to an ankle joint, just terrible. Ice bags are where it's at, ziplocks to be precise, but to get the proper crushed ice to enable their best use... well, let's just say I broke a lot of bags, and smashed a finger or two along the way. Ahh, but if I had this!! All would have been so much better. This bag and mallet are absolutely awesome. The mallet is of the prefect hardness, and the bag is of the perfect material and thickness, that if you really want, you can make snow, you can so smash and smash and smash. Actually, it is a good bit fun, to be sure. So, whether you want crushed ice for drinks or snowcones, or as I have related, for ice bags for medicinal use, I gladly and confidently recommend to you, this. The smash-o-matic! This thing is truly great!

Okay, I had never hear of a Lewis bag until I ordered this one from Amazon Vine in exchange for my honest review. This Lewis Ice Bag and Mallet, from the ENNIYU Store on Amazon Vine caught my eye because I liked the look of the mallet. I looked the mallet and bag over carefully when they arrived, and realized I needed to do a little research. First: why Lewis? Apparently Lewis was a Doctor noted for making the best martinis around, and he crushed his ice in a bank bag meant for coins. Pound the ice in the bag for perfect crushed ice, pound too hard and you get shaved ice. Shaved ice melts too fast in your martini shaker and waters down the drink. It takes practice. According to experts, the bag should be triple stitched. I examined this one from ENNIYU and it appears to be double stitched with what I believe is called an overlock stitch. Before using I'll add a couple rows of stitching with high-strength thread just for insurance. Some users on Reddit complained that their Lewis bags tear out after a few uses, and that may be from over filling and then hitting them too hard. I'm thinking that maybe the sharp edges of the mallet may be the problem, so I intend to round the edges and corners with sandpaper before using. I imagine any modern machine-made mallet and bag will need the same finessing. One user suggested tempering the ice so it isn't frozen quite so hard, so let it sit out a bit to acclimate before pounding. I think this mallet and bag are well made considering modern factory conditions, so I'm not deducting any stars for what I personally feel needs finessing.

My wife was watching some reality TV show and the butler was making some kind of martini. He used one of these Lewis bags to crush the ice and she told me, "I have to have one"! Well, since I never deny my wife anything, I said, "Of course dear, anything you want". Well, guess what? It does indeed give you the tools needed to make crushed ice that is perfect for that special adult beverage. Sure, it take s a little practice, but not much at all, and it is fun. We put in about 2 cups of ice cubes until you can lay out the bag on the counter without any cubes on top of the other. We use the face of the mallet for the initial rough crushing then turn the mallet on it's side for the final crush. Perfect. If we don't use all the ice we've crushed, we roll the bag down closed and put it in the freezer for the next time. This Lewis bag is very well made. It is well-stitched and the material is thick enough to not soak through. The mallet is also well made and balanced. This is that bar or kitchen gadget you never knew you needed. It would make a really nice gift as well.

Bag is nice with material thickness and stitching that seems like it will stand up to the pressure pounding ice will produce. The mallet was far better than I expected! Seems VERY secure and solid. I'll put some food grade mineral oil on it to keep it even better even longer.

My husband has been into making different mixology-style drinks lately, so we wanted to get something where we can make crushed ice. This definitely did the trick, as the mallet is nice and weighted (and it's a good size) and the bag is fairly large, too. The only issue was that once you do crush the ice, some water from the crushed bits seep through the bag, but it's not too bad. I don't have anything better to use, so I can't complain too much! Does the job and doesn't leak *that* much, just worth a mention :)

This is a good ice crusher set with bag and mallet. We make nugget sized ice with our small icemaker. We bag up 10 pound bags at a time and put them in the freezer for later use. The problem happens when we want to use the ice and it is all clumped together so using this bag and mallet to gently break up that ice and use it is a really convenient way to use the frozen ice. The bag and the wooden mallet are well-made and I'm hoping they last a good long time when we need to break up our frozen ice. So far everything is working well and I hope it continues to do so.
