I bought this for my 45yo brother (yes, we're nerds). He was amazed by the complexity and structural strength of the build. The wings expanding and flapping is super cool. The counter locking gears is just neat. I knew it was big from the specs, but when I saw it in person, I was surprised--this thing is huge. I might buy one for myself now, too.

The Atreides Ornithopter arrived today and I think it’s beautiful! For me it fully captures the ornithopter described between the books and the current movie series. There are some compromises made to accommodate the functional flapping wings and the retractable landing gear, but I feel they’re quite acceptable. Some early reviewers have noted the use of certain colors in the Technics work. I feel it’s 50/50. Sure, they could have used available black colored pieces in place of the red and blue, but I like the use of those colors to break up the black and gray. If you want, you can always aquire the appropriate pieces in black, if you want to be a purist. There is room for three mini-figs in the cockpit. I do wish the Paul Atreides figure looked just a little more mature. Overal, the figures included are ver6 nice. Because of the amount of Technics needed to allow the wing flapping and the retractable landing gear, there is no space inside the body of the ‘thoper for figures. That’s fine for me as the cockpit hols three. The instruction bookletis very clear, so I can’t wait to tear into this next week. Trying to find a lightin kit for it, and possible a display case. Just wish I had the space to display with the wings unfolded!

Legos are always way too expensive, I haven't bought a kit in many years. I love the Dune books and the movies were great and I saw this and decided to try Legos again. At my time of purchase it was $165, which amazed me because it seems you're lucky to get a kit half this size for that with none of the features these days. Its bigger than I expected, plus it has 7 unique minifigures all with cool accessories. The design and engineering of it are both awesome, the landing gear opens up and locks into place so it can stand on it, the cockpit opens and has a seat connected with only 2 studs so you can take it out and replace minifigures easily, the wings fold back and open up and flap up and down with a satisfying spring mechanism (there are some lego technic parts snuck in for the mechanisms), and its all surprisingly sturdy. Also, how can you not love the flying Baron Harkkonen figure?
