  • Gets much hotter than competing pots. Heats hot enough to blend antimony and lead, can melt aluminum with flux.
This is a great melting pot. I've tried other melting pots, and although they can melt lead and can usually melt zinc with zinc chloride for a flux, they cannot handle antimony or aluminum. Antimony is crucial for hardening lead alloys: lead by itself is extremely soft, and antimony is extremely brittle, but alloyed together they make an alloy strong enough to resist fingernails, print newspapers in the old days before digital content, and make bullets that penetrate. But you can't reliably make such an alloy below antimony's melting point, because it has the nasty habit of oxidizing to Sb2O3, which forms a shield around your antimony and prevents you from alloying it with lead. I'm pleased to report that this melting pot can melt antimony into lead and make a durable alloy. It also blends antimony and bismuth, which is important to us greenie weenies who want to shoot stupid invasive species but not harm native scavengers that might eat the dead invasives, ingest lead shot, and die of lead poisoning. Even aluminum can be melted in one of these fine devices, provided you flux it well, allowing you to cast it into any shape you want. The ability to melt antimony without flux but aluminum only with it puts a tight limit on its maximum temperature. It's between 630 and 660 C, or 1167 and 1220 F. This is backed up by the fact that it glows with a reddish-orange color when it is at its maximum temperature, a good sign of something in the mid-600s C. Other melting pots I've tried melt lead but cannot get hot enough to glow, indicating they're limited to temps in the low 400s C. Still though, use a flux if you are blending antimony and lead or bismuth, because the Sb2O3 makes a durable layer that is annoyingly hard to chip off. And, of course, goggles and heat-resistant gloves are a must. Don't be like me and nearly blind yourself because you forgot to dry your graphite crucible and splatter molten lead-antimony into your face, saving your vision only by your blink reflex and its willingness to burn your eyelids to save your eyes. ;) ... show more

  • Works well but......
Using it for salt bath annealing brass cases. It works well and is the right size and melts the salts quickly. The only issue is the temperature will float and have to keep making minor adjustments to keep the salts at a constant temp. ..I guess I'll eventually connect a PID controller, but for now I'm satisfied with it's performance...Before first use, clean it well and heat it up outside. First use it'l smoke for a few minutes until the manufacturing oils are cooked off. ... show more

  • MAKE YOUR OWN JIGS
Is an excellent product, melt the lead in 15 minutes and maintains the heat for a long time. I recommend it to make your own fishing jigs

  • Works well
Easy to use, easy to store, just be aware it smokes like crazy on its first run until the packing grease/oil burns out. Otherwise, I was looking for something to smelt/cast low-melting-point alloys like Wood's metal and Field's metal. This product is WAY too hot for that, even on the lowest setting, but it's cheap enough I'll keep it around in case I find a need to work with lead. ... show more

  • off label usage: pewter casting
I was a little worried by the instruction manual's claim that you must not melt pewter in this pot, but I risked it, with lead free p98 pewter, and I was very happy with the result. At a setting of 2 I got a good balance between flow and draw production. I only wish there were an indicator that the pot is on other than the heat of the pot. ... show more

  • Works great.. But for future buyers
Works great.. But for future buyers.. Please clean out the pot completely.. I turned it on and all the packing grease started to smoke up and smelled horrible.. But once the grease burned away it works just like its supposed to.. No smoke after the grease was gone.

  • Best pot for the price in my opinion I have used 3 this is the the best for melting little amounts.
I love this little guy it is a beast it likes to take big things and melt them into puddles. Great built strong easy to clean small pot make batching switch a breeze makes running a production pot much easier by keeping the lead hot while you pour mass lead.ots biggest contributer is also it's down fall the small pot. ... show more
