  • So far so good
I bought this the other day and it came on time. I was a little worried with the other reviewers stating their were counterfeit copies. Mine came in and I check that the free book code worked along with the front cover displaying the correct spelling. So far so good, I didn’t get a bad copy. Yay! Anyways, good read so far. Easy, pleasant to keep up with it. No grammatical errors that I can plainly see. Syntax and pictures are easily legible. Im studying this book so I can get better for my Azure studies. One thing I will notate, Powershell ISE is no longer being supported by Microsoft unfortunately and Powershell 7 doesn’t work with it. This book focuses heavily on ISE and the regular command interface. With that being said, if you have Powershell v5 or later then you should be able to run it with Powershell ISE no problem. The new kid on the block is Visual Code Studios so therefore that’s what you want to aim for when you get good with Powershell for Azure or AZ-104 certification ... show more

  • Great book even for people experienced but never did anything but copied scripts
Basically, I'm hoping that I can master PowerShell a bit better with this book, and so far I'm learning a lot even though I've lived through supporting Windows for a while. What I really like about the book is it does a pretty good job on breaking things up so that you can read them. I also like the labs at the ends of the chapters and I do them a few times to get the hang of things and remember them better. The book is also very well structured for self learning and serves very well as a classroom in a book. Well worth the cost. BTW, read this book first before you go onto Learning PowerShell Scripting in a Month of Lunches, as I purchased the scripting book first and as I was reading the forward it recommended this book because I wasn't advanced enough for it yet. So you want to start with Windows PowerShell first if you don't have a really good foundation in PowerShell like me. I'm hoping that I will learn how to create my own tools for auditing and responding to incidents in the network after finishing both books. ... show more

  • Mistakes in the book that will leave the student sctratching their head and no instructor to question...
I'll update this as I go, but early impressions have me a bit concerned. I purchased this in homes of improving my personaly ability, but I already am familiar with PowerShell. So far I am to page 29 and I've already run across my first command example that is erroneous (mistyped into the book and made it past who knows how many people to make it to print). That certainly raises concerns about how the rest of my experience will proceed on my book that believes itself to hold a $44.99 value... The command in question is "Get-EventLog -newest 20 -Log -Application" per page 29, which even a quick glance told me was never going to work. I of course thought, what the heck do I know, lets give it a whirl and it didn't work. The error, if you can't spot it as quickly, is that there is no such parameter as "-application" so the hyphen is erroneous. This was meant to be a value for the previous parameter -Log, an abbreviation of -LogName, but if you are new, as in page 29 and only a handful of examples in new, you would not likely know this. This is is a minor mistake for Joe off the street to make, but not for an educational book. This might have not even been a big deal for someone to to fall asleep on the job when proof reading and overlook on like page 290, but not page 29. I'm really hoping the rest of the examples are better, but like I said this was only on page 29 so I'm not feeling great about this purchase at the moment... ... show more

  • Well done book on PowerShell -
I am most of the way through it now. I don't know what some of the reviews are talking about regarding this book being fake. I have the ebook - no problems so far. If you need to learn Powershell, this covers the subject. You should be aware of the MAJOR differences of "Windows Powershell" (5.1 and earlier) and the not as good ".Net Core Powershell" (since 5.1). This book covers Windows Powershell, which is the default on that comes on Windows 10. Watch out for books that cover the new .Net Core version (e.g. 7.1) if you need to learn the Windows version. ... show more

  • Reasonable book, but you don't get to 'script' until the last chapters
I'm a Perl scripter and was looking for a book or books to help me with a couple of Powershell scripts. This one came fairly highly recommended, so I bought it along with a 'CookBook' type book. The book does give a very good background and covers how to setup your environment quite well. If you know nothing of scripts and need to start at ground zero, then this book might be for you. It focuses on completing simple tasks with a single line of scripting and does not address multi-line scripts until the last chapters. My projects were more involved and this book left me looking for the next book, which might cover my needs. I recommend it for rank beginners. ... show more
