Description

🌱What is Aeration? Lawns are notorious for becoming compacted over time. The dense matting of grass as well as constant foot traffic cause soil to become dense, making it harder for air, nutrients, and water to reach the roots of your lawn. Aeration is one way to solve this problem. By punching little holes into the soil, you're giving roots access to the essential resources they need (water, air, nutrition). 🌱The Benefits of Aeration Most of these apply to core aeration and not just dethatching: Soil absorbs more water 🏆Reduces soil compaction 🏆Thatch breaks down easier 🏆The lawn is more resistant to heat and drought stress 🏆Oxygen uptake of soil increases 🏆Stronger root development 🏆Fertilizer and nutrients in the soil are more easily used by grass 🏆Water runoff decreases significantly.🌱How to Aerate Your Lawn? If you're set on aerating your lawn, there are a few tips to help you do it correctly: 👉Make sure your soil is moist. Aerating a lawn that is dry will make your job a lot harder, as the force required to pull out the plugs is much greater in dry soil. Wait until after a rain or a sprinkler run to aerate. 👉Allow your soil plugs to dry, then break them down. It’s not necessary to manually break down your soil plugs, but it does help speed up the process. You can run a rake over them to break them down. 👉Run over your lawn more than once. Most aeration machines or manual aerators don’t cover much surface area, so it’s a good idea to run over each section more than once for full coverage. 👉Continue to care for your lawn. Aeration doesn't solve everything — you still need to mow, fertilize, water, and care for your lawn.

  • Big heavy-duty fork for lawn aeration. I am excited to start using it all over my lawn.
O.K. so this isn't just a lawn aerator but a plug sampler. I am not sure if that was the idea, but the fork holes are so big that even with their design for the soil not to be collected it still does to a degree with some of it. I think it depends on your dirt. I have clay-like dirt. So, if you want to you can do some plug samples of the dirt in your lawn if it is like mine and sticks. I have always seen aerators for lawns that have small spikes on the bottom of a small board you wear like shoes. Then you walk around your yard with them putting small little holes in your grass. But this tool definitely, isn't putting small holes into your grass. These are a lot bigger than anything I call spikes. I am not sure if you are supposed to have holes in your lawn this big or not but since it is made to do just that I guess it is. The tool itself was simple to put together. It only needed two screws in it with the bolt heads screwed onto them from the other side. They give you both an Allen wrench and a regular wrench to help screw these together. It does mention in the little manual that "when" they, the screws, become loose just tighten them up again. So, I guess I am to expect the screws to come loose once in a while. The fork itself is tough and well-made. And it is comfortable enough to use. Of course, the softer your dirt is the easier it will be. I have been wanting to aerate my lawn for years now and I wasn't sure how I wanted to do it. When I saw this though I definitely, wanted to try it first. So, we will see how well my lawn likes it. Not sure how long it will take to actually see a difference in my lawn if I do at all. I don't know. But I am excited to start using it all around my lawn. ... show more

  • Works Good and More Easily than I Imagined; Plug Results may Vary by Weather, Soil Type
Have an area of the yard that is going to need some work this year, so I thought I would get an early start this spring on it with this aerator. Initial thoughts as I worked this 7 x 7 area... ~Easy assembly. Just a couple of screws with TRUE lock nuts. ~Beefier than I imagined. The unit is heavy and a good gauge of steel. Should last. ~Way easier than I imagined. Was really able to get into a "shoveling groove" and knock this area out in about 10-15 minutes with pretty close spacing. The cores cut through the semi wet ground "like butter". ~Coring was average. I was able to get some cores up, but a lot of the wet soil did not seem to core the way I can get a powered aerator. I am not necessarily blaming the aerator necessarily as there are many factors, but I do note it here. Overall a good value for what I needed and I would recommend for small yards. ... show more

  • Easy to put together and use
I really like this Hermsche/Better Homes and Gardens Lawn Coring Aerator tool. I got it because of a patch out front where the flowers keep dying because in rainy season, the area becomes a bit of a wash over clay soil, so it becomes so hard packed, nothing grows back. First, this tool comes in a few pieces, and has to be assembled. It was very simple and easy, took less than 5 minutes, with minimal instructions. It's very sturdy. It has 3 coring spikes on the bottom, which you stick into the dirt, then stand on the horizontal bar to put your weight into driving it into the ground. As it goes into the dirt, some plugs get pushed through and out some holes a little higher up. It was very, very easy to do in the soil that wasn't just packed clay. I found it enjoyable, even. I'm ready to do the whole lawn out back once we figure out where is safe (to not damage the buried irrigation), and I'm not exactly a ball of energy. It's been raining, so that helps (they advise to do this right after rain or watering). On hard-packed clay soil, I wasn't expecting it to work at all, but it performed surprisingly well. It didn't go all the way in everywhere, but I found that if I started it at a slight angle and pushed on one side first and then the other, it worked better. I am going to go back out after the next rain and see if adding the holes loosened things up some. Regardless, it LOOKS better, even so. This is a good quality gardening tool that does the job well. ... show more

  • Sturdy tool but may not work for all soil types
The Hermsche Lawn Aerator Coring Tool is a sturdy manual plug type lawn aeration tool. I was surprised to see that it is co-branded as a Better Homes & Gardens product. It arrives in 3 sections. Assembly is easy and it took less than 5 minutes to put together with the 2 included screws and lock nuts using the included Allen wrench and open end wrench. This was my first experience using a lawn aerator. I did not have a good experience, which I think is due to our soil type. Our soil is a sticky, not quite clay soil. We have had enough recent rain that the aerator did not have much difficult penetrating the soil. But the soil stuck to the outside of the tool and was pulled up when the tool was removed. The soil on the inside of the tubes packed in very hard and could not be pushed out when the tool was pushed in the next time. It was very hard to clear the tubes even with a stick. There is every indication that the tool would work as intended with a less sticky soil so I didn't take off any stars based on my experience using this aerator. ... show more

  • Pulls Great Plugs
I'm a middle aged lady who likes my lawn care and does most of it myself. I wanted to get some aeration going in some patchy spots this spring before I fertilize. This pulls out great plugs. It's a bit of work but I only have patches to do and this tool saves me from hiring someone to do the whole lawn which is not necessary. USER TIP: Watch the weather. It depends a bit on your soil, but you want to pick your day. Don't do it right after a heavy rain when the ground will be too wet and heavy and don't do it when it's been too dry either. Expect to learn when your lawn is best for being able to get into the ground and pull out the plugs. But if you figure that out: lawn happiness! ... show more
