  • A Tad Overpriced For What It Is
A somewhat obscure little percussive item, used more for effect than rhythmic purposes.... The Flex-A-Tone creates kind of a warped, high-pitched ghostly bell tone that apparently can't be emulated on any music software, has some degree of variation depending on how you hold and shake it, which makes it a great random sound. Considering what it's constructed of, 36 bucks is pretty steep, but when you like unique sounds in your recordings like I do, sometimes you have to bite the bullet, especially if that sound can't be recreated any way else. Also great for interesting sound effects in theater or other types of performance where sound is a significant element. At least this is a good sized model, delivers in the volume department. ... show more

  • CAUTION: Only for very large hands!
I have a good sized strong woman's hand as a pianist but I could not get my hand around it comfortably, let alone control it. So I returned it. A guy could probably make it work better. I then bought the smaller version and that was perfect. It has the same amount of notes available and I was able to control all kind of subtleties on it. ... show more

  • Fun and extremely unique sounding
A pivotal instrument in my favorite Can song, "Sing Swan Song"...so I had to have one. It's a bit of a two trick pony...with the strikers or a bow. It's also pretty hard to play (accurately) plus my cat hates it. Other than the last part, which is that you might annoy everyone around you, it's a blast. ... show more

  • OK
A fun instrument to add interest to a piece.

  • Excessively large…
Oh large to play with one hand without putting tension on it.

  • It was great. It's large with lots of tones
Used it for a Halloween band concert to get spooky tones. It was great. It's large with lots of tones. It might be too big for smaller hands. The smaller one would probably be easier to play for some people. I've never seen one before so I didn't know what to expect but this one worked great.

  • Good quality, works as advertised
This is a good quality instrument, just like the one my son uses in music class at school.

  • This is a wonderful instrument for effects
This is a wonderful instrument for effects! especially for the musician playing improvisational avant-garde music. It creates a wonderful bell like tone in which you can change tone by flexing the metal plate the little beater strikes on. Recommended for all percussionists/drummers.
