I really like Lamy fountain pens. The Al-Star is no exception. I have several Lamys, and I can't decide which I like best. They all write well. Make sure to first clean them thoroughly, especially any converters using a bulb syringe and a regular syringe and blunt needle for the converter respectively using dish soap and water (they can have oily manufacturing residue) for best performance. The Al-Star is comfortable to hold, well balanced, and modern looking. Lamy's interchangeable nibs are in a class of their own as far as looks and performance go, despite their relative wide nib-size variability compared to the three big Japanese brands. ... show more

Wanted a fountain pen that would be easy for beginners, got what I wanted. Solid construction, smooth writing with very little feedback. Lost 1 star because the clip gets a little loose after use, and the ink that comes with the pen is subpar. Buy a converter and better ink from a company that's not Lamy.
