Comfortable, Supportive and Wears Like Iron

This was my first pair of Targhee III mid waterproof boots. I previously wore Targhee II mid waterproof boots but when the III's came out I thought I would give them a try. I have a fairly wide forefoot (D+) but a very skinny heel (AAA). These boots provide plenty of space for wide feet in the toe box but at a the same time the lacing is such that I can snug them up to hold my skinny heels in place without slipping. The comfort is excellent right out of the box and it just gets better as they break in. Ankle support is also excellent with lots of cushioning. The lace loops are more durable than the II's because they are made of leather rather than nylon. I wore these boots almost daily for more than two years with no sign of wear. I also wore them on a long trip to Israel, Egypt and Jordan and they stood up to everything that was thrown at a them. After lots of long hard use one of the soles finally separated from the upper and I had to bid them a fond farewell. I replaced them with another pair of Targhee III's and am looking forward to more years of great service and comfort. ... show more

Great fit and no break in needed

I bought late in the planning for a back country hiking trip. No time for breaking in. We did 75 miles without any issues. 0 blisters or rub areas. These may be the best hikers I have ever owned. I just ordered the same pair in low ankle style. Sizing was spot on. I like to have some wiggle room for my toes and they have an ample toe box. So far the show almost zero wear. I used to love these boots until the quality went down hill. I used to be able to make a pair last a good year with heavy use and the last few pairs started having the soles come off within a month and water getting in. The also changed the insoles to cheaper ones that don't work so good. I don't think I'll buy Keen again until they get back in the game of good quality. ... show more

3 shoes prime wardrobe review

I am going on a two night 15 mile backpacking trip in a couple of weeks and my current hi-tech hikers are in need of replacement. I decided to use prime wardrobe, which was fantastic and I highly recommend it. I chose 3 top ranked shoes: 1: keen targhee 3 2: Solomon gtx ultra 3 mid 3: Columbia Newton mid. These 3 hiking shoes were among the highest rated I could find. I wanted a light shoe that was waterproof and had a big enough toe box to not cause any toe issues. Weight: the keens were only slightly lighter than the Solomons, the Newtons were noticeably heavier. I was surprised with this, because keens are usually big heavy robust shoes. Solomon is known for its comfort and roomy toe box and they didn't disappoint a good amount of space. The keens and Columbia boots were similarly adequate. There was an unexpected surprise with the Solomons, the arch support was hitting my foot in a bad spot and angle, it was to far to the heel and it made them uncomfortable. The Columbia's were much less expensive and frankly you could tell, didn't feel like they could be very rugged. Eyelets for the laces were rough and felt like they would eventually wear through, maybe on the trail. So the were out. It came down to comfort and price. I went with the keens. The Solomons were around $160, the keens were around $140-$150. I sent them all back and decided to get the keens in a half size larger. I actually got a very good deal, they had one color for $97 so I jumped on them, gonna end up mud color soon anyway. I strongly suggest prime wardrobe, especially for something this important. Keens, mens Targhee III Mid Height Hiking Boot is a very good lightweight boot, with a few caveats. I live in northeastern Minnesota and put anywhere from 3-8 miles daily into these boots. Back in the woods, there exists nary a level foot plant, and trails are littered with rocks, roots, and seasonal moisture. My feet, which require occasional maintenance, are in their 7th decade, and I continually look for light weight boots that at least accommodate my feet with a bit of ‘dignity. I may have found them. First, shop for the deal. Color of the boot means little to me, it’s the utility of the boot that matters. Picture of new boots compared to what boots will look like after six months. As lower part of uppers deteriorate, there’s little one can do. As uppers separate from sole, shoo-goo will address that issue. The boots are light weight, not a whole lot heavier than running shoes. What would a running shoe look like after 4-500 miles? The insoles are perhaps the best I have ever experienced in a light weight boot, yet after a while, no fault of the boot, my old feet rebelled, and an inexpensive orthotic purchased through Amazon solved the problem. The soles themselves exhibit little wear and provide sound traction. Perhaps one of the finer characteristics of this boot, and the Keen line, is a roomy toe box. Bravo Keen. Water resistance will deteriorate over time in-particular as uppers themselves deteriorate. My only real negative comment about the boots is that the tongue requires some gusseting. Unless one has ‘kankles’ or wears short gaiters, pebbles, bits of bark, etc will fall into spaces as tongue pulls away from ankle, and it will no matter how one’s laces the boot. as in picture. The boots seem to run just a tad large, which is fine for me as a heavier sock provides my feet with a bit more protection. Older very broken-in boots feel like that old pair of slippers. The Targhee III’s are excellent day hike and general wear boot. I don’t know if I’d carry a heavy pack with these boots, but they would make excellent camp boots. During my backpacking days, my dog, who carried his own pack (food, bowls, and a few other odds and ends) would also carry my camp boots. Updated, totally changed opinion

Update less than one month in: It's pretty obvious to me less than one month later that I purchased a name, not a high quality pair of shoes. They're doing the same thing the cheap Skechers do, coming unglued from the outsole. They hurt my feet walking on concrete floors all day, even with good insoles. The rubber is starting to separate from the softer part. Already no longer waterproof. It leaves me to wonder if Keen work boots are the same, or if they're made to a higher standard. I don't think I'll be risking double the price of these to find out. These may be okay for casual hiking on dirt, but don't get them for soft toe work boots or long walks on concrete! Original review left below for full disclosure: Only 3 days in and I've got to say, I wasn't expecting much for the price but I'm pleasantly surprised. I bought these for work, and while they're very comfortable for walking, when I've got to stand in one place for a couple hours, they do hurt. Not enough padding in the ball of the foot. The toe box is plenty big, and my toes have a bit of wiggle room. They do fit snug right behind the toes, but I expect that from decent hiking boots. What I like about them is grip on wet epoxy floor, can step on a rock on the pavement and barely feel it, and a lot of built in heel cushion. If they last longer than 4 months, they'll be a better value for the money than the previous brand I purchased a few times. I'm sure I can solve the standing in one place issue with better insoles, the ones included are paper thin in the ball of the foot. Good for value

If you want decent hiking/walking shoes at a good price, go with these. Not super clunky, they are waterproof, the laces are nylon, have really good grip on them. Only thing I’d dock a point off of them is that the laces seem to untie themselves and I’m just not a fan of double lacing. But they also are normal size there isn’t a jump in size up or down ... show more
