  • Good Sturdy House At An Affordable Price
Style: Heated
This is a very nice little house and quite pretty. It's the perfect size for one cat and the heater works well. It does not come with assembly instructions but it's a very straightforward puzzle to put together. The only annoying thing is that, although they drilled holes in all of the connecting spots, they did not drill corresponding holes in the places that you screw those parts to. The wood is not soft so I had to locate a drill to create those holes. I also had to locate my husband, as, at least in our case, assembly was awkward enough that it took two people to put the house together. That is why I didn't give it the maximum number of stars for easy assembly. That said, it's just lovely once it's built. We bought this for an outdoor feral so I put it on our porch. It's weatherproof to a point but our covered porch does not say totally dry so I placed it up on a large, flat plastic basket to keep the bottom dry. The birchwood does not appear to be finished for really wet, Illinois weather so I wrapped a folded contractor bag around it, which works really well. You could easily paint it with exterior paint but I got it in December and just wanted to get it out quickly. I'll probably paint in in Spring. I only put one of the flaps on, at the back, because our feral spooks easily. It didn't take long for her to warm up to this little house and she eats all her meals there. I'm hoping she'll begin to hang out in it too, but she also has a much bigger, straw filled home that she has lived for a few years. All in all, I'd recommend this shelter. It's sturdy, lovely to look at and the price is right. ... show more

  • Cats approved and gave 5 stars immediately!
Style: Heated
My feral cats took to these immediately, so I love it too, with a few caveats. I have also used the K&H Outdoor Kitty House AND the K&H A-frame, and they are good products too. The Birchwood Manor is smaller that the Kitty House, but I prefer it because the hard wood surfaces are more cleanable, important for feral cats. Instead of using the heating pad (no electricity where the houses are used) I insulated the Birchwood units with 1/2 inch board insulation. It was a pain to measure and figure out how to cut the insulation board to to the right sizes, but the house itself went together easily with a screwdriver and is very sturdy. The plywood is much nicer than expected. I thought I would have to paint these, but the plywood has a nice finish, although I doubt it is weatherproof. The size might fit two smallish cats who really love to cuddle, but most cats will require a Manor of their own. In comparison, the K&H A-frame easily fits two big cats, and the Outdoor Kitty House might fit two medium cats. A couple suggestions for K&H-- 1) why not make a larger size that could fit 2 cats? Because cats really would prefer to be together for warmth and safety. 2) Would be wonderful if you included patterns or measurements for adding insulation board 3) An accessory selection would be great-- like a really waterproof roof with overhand (to add to this kit), or perhaps pre-cut insulation boards. and no heating pad for areas without electical outlets.I have never been disappointed in a K&H product! ... show more

  • Very easy to put together
Style: Heated
Very easy to put together. It's a thinner wood and not insulated so I recommend adding thin Styrofoam or straw to help. I had extra shingles in my garage that I put on the roof for added protection.

  • Great Design & Quality at Bargain Price
Style: Heated
I just assembled this cat hut, and was very pleased with the quality: nicely machined, solid wood panels- not veneer. Clever features include a glue strip to seal the peak of the roof, walls with grooves that fit together snugly, and accurately aligned pre-drilled holes for the screws. The heated pad is adequate, and has a cord fit for outdoor use. It was easy to assemble, in less than 15 minutes. Now that winters's coming, I needed a small house for my covered front porch, to offer shelter to a few neighborhood outdoor cats who seem to get locked out of their own houses and end up at mine, seeking kibble and attention. We have raccoons, so the back exit was a necessity to avoid anyone getting trapped. I browsed the available products at various sites, and at Amazon, and the price for this unit was a fraction of what was being asked for less substantial houses, sold without a heated pad. The house is small- which I saw as a plus, since a small house is more likely to get and stay warm than a larger one. Still, there is ample space for all but the largest cats to cozy up in. In sum, if you're looking for a well-made wood unit to shelter a small to medium sized cat, this one will do the trick. ... show more

  • Good little cabin for outdoors
Style: Heated
Started feeding a little stray (against my usual policy) who was having a hard time finding anything by hunting in my yard. He is pretty small, but got bloated with worms looking like he might explode. I de-wormed him, and de-flead (orally) successfully with an item on Ebay from "St. Francis Animal Rescue", similar to Capstar. He comes looking for food twice a day but Winter is coming so I decided to try to keep him from freezing and got this shelter. Very easy to put together, sturdy, seems fairly waterproof and if I had any complaint it would be that the way the doorway "flaps" attach inside doesn't make the best protection from rain getting in. I do have a tarp overhead partially sheltering it from rain but decided to just gorilla tape the front door onto the outside so help keep the rain out a little better (not shown in the pic). I also laid a small dish-towel inside making it easier to clean than removing the heated pad every time, and I spray cedar oil in it every once in a while to deter fleas. I kept the door flaps off for a few days so he would realize he can go in and out but heavy rain coming so had to stick it on there. So far seems fine... ... show more

  • Cold, cold, cold!
Style: Heated
Wish I could return!!!!!! Just finally put this together, tried it out thinking it should be better than the canvas and plastic k&h hut. No. Cold, not weather resistant, heating pad is only half heated and hard. Its freezing in the hut. Now I see why so many people have to alter their design for warmth. ... show more
