  • Lovely to look at, writes smoothly, screw in converter!
Color: Light Blue Clear (Gold Trim) Style: Medium
Excellent pen, and at the price unbelievable value. The medium nib writes smoothly and lays down a lot of ink for being a medium. Using it with JHerbin's Emeraude de Chivor shimmer ink, and it's flowing beautifully (although the line isn't broad enough for the shimmer). I usually prefer a broad nib, other than a few note taking pens (small notebooks mean fine nibs so you can get more on a page...), and I'd love to have one of these with a broad nib. Very pretty, on a desk with other fountain pens that I have in rotation right now, it looks right at home despite being a fraction of most of the other pens' prices. Note that this particular pen has a VERY fat body. Again, I like the feel of a large pen barrel, so exactly what I wanted. Just know that it will not fit into some of the small capacity ink bottles you may have. That made me a little edgy because that meant pulling the converter to fill that way, and that's when I discovered the converter is a screw in and that's a huge plus for me. In my experience screw in converters are less likely to leak. But nothing came with the pen letting me know about that. I was tugging and tugging and then thought hmmm, let's see if it unscrews, and it did. I was very close to stripping the screw in threads. PLEASE let people know if a pen has a screw in converter! I'll be watching for a broad nib... Maybe in bright blue, or orange... ... show more

  • Easily the best sub-$15 pen that I have encountered.
Color: Wine Red (Gold Trim) Style: Extra Fine
About the only realistic value comparison is the Jinhao X159, which was also a value breakthrough when it was released. But I find the 9019 a great improvement. The build quality feels like a major step up -- the overall fit/finish is very good. The plastic is satisfyingly thick in all areas, and doesn't feel flimsy anywhere. Very large and attractive nib. Also, I flushed the nib with water before use, and found traces of blue ink -- this confirmed other reports that Jinhao is doing some actual QC steps/testing on the nib/feed. It was reflected in a perfect writing experience that required zero nib adjustment out of the box. Better than many high-end pens I've owned. This adds enormous value at this price point. My nib is EF, which is highly recommended if you need to do any small writing or math. These Chinese nibs tend to run large. Best to think of them as one size larger than advertized. The pen holds an excellent quantity of ink -- the new converter design holds more than double that of a standard international converter. A very welcome improvement. I went with the wine color, which I find pleasing. Nothing spectacular, but nice. The size and shape are extremely comfortable to my long fingers. Possibly the most comfortable writer I have. But, this is an area that you'll need to think about -- the pen is very big, compared to the average fountain pen. It's large enough that certain modes of carry start to become inconvenient. For this reason, I don't use it as a "carry everywhere" pen, which is a bit of a pity, because the price/quality/features would otherwise make it ideal for that kind of use. Almost nothing can compare at this price. Two of my other value favorites are the asvine v126 and the penbbs 480. But, each of those are *multiples* of the 9019's price. ... show more

  • size 8 fine nib
Color: Ivory White (Gold Trim) Style: Fine
I have a bent nib, fine nibs and medium nibs. This nib is larger than my medium but smaller than the bent nib. I was really hoping for something between fine and medium. The pen is nice and light and though large, it's not uncomfortable to hold. Smooth writing. No other complaints except the nib size. ... show more

  • Amazing writing experience for the price
Color: Bright Red (Gold Trim) Style: Medium
The pen arrived in a plastic bag underneath a heavy item in a soft bag (what could possibly go wrong?), but was in fine condition. The collar that holds the cartridge was jammed into the body of the pen with the gasket hanging off the end, but when retrieved and fixed where it was supposed to be there was no damage done. The pen body is very large with a nib of proportional size. It writes wet with no hard starts, very smooth for the price, and great line quality. The plastic casing feels light and brittle (though it survived my manhandling!), but for such a low price and such a good writing experience, I’m impressed. ... show more

  • Exactly as expected
Color: Piano Black (Gold Trim) Style: Fine
The Jinhao 9019 is big and fat. The fine nib writes beautifully. Looks great! Very attractive gold converter holding a lot of ink. No cartridge included, but I personally would not use one. The threaded cap takes five twists (not full rotations) to remove; six to to replace. Despite the size, the pen is not heavy. It posts securely but is well balanced without posting. The size of the pen might make it difficult for smaller hands to use comfortably. It also makes it fun to own if only to amuse your friends. The black and gold version looks like it costs hundreds; for $14.00 it's a steal. ... show more

  • Gorgeous looking. Disappointing performance
Color: Piano Black (Gold Trim) Style: Medium
I bought 2 of these fountain pens because of how they looked in the photos, knowing that for the price it would not be anything spectacular. Indeed, their appearance is wonderful, they look impressive, but beyond that things change, it has good finishes but the materials are of low quality, the plastic body is easily scratched. The nib has a gold color part which began to disappear when cleaning it since it was stained. I had to take it apart to completely clean the gold color. The nibs are out of tune and had to be aligned for it to write acceptably. For the price they are good, but they are not worth it for anything serious. ... show more
