    • Very Solid Ladder, But Instruction Manual Needs Work

I wanted a retractable ladder for doing occasional work around my house. Unlike my clunky and awkward old extension ladder, retractable ones like this model can be stored efficiently because they become quite compact when fully retracted. They are also easy to throw in a car or truck when offsite work requires one. This ladder meets those needs very well, once you learn how to use it properly. I recently put the 12.5 ft. version to work while putting up holiday lights outside, and it did the job very well. Here are my observations: Positives: 1. The ladder feels very solid and looks well-constructed. You can feel this when extending and retracting it. It also feels heavy-duty and secure while standing on it. 2. It has a number of thoughtful features, such as a velcro strap that holds the ladder together when fully retracted. It also has a nice "handle" under the bottom rung that makes it easy to carry around. And its feet are rounded slightly so they can still grip the ground surface while leaning the ladder against a wall. 3. Each rung has its own locking and releasing mechanism, which allows you to extend or retract each one individually. 4. When retracting the ladder, the rung you are releasing via its locking mechanism does not come all the way down, leaving a few inches of space. This appears to be a safety feature that prevents the weight of all the fully retracted rungs above from smashing your fingers. When you then release the rung below that, the first gap goes away and moves to the rung below that. This continues down to the last rung at the bottom. Good design! Negative Note that I only have one negative comment, which is about the instruction manual. Simply speaking, it's inadequate. It's only four pages long, and all but the last two sentences on the last page are concerned with safety warnings and instructions about how to extend and utilize the ladder. As for retracting it, the final two sentences about this are as follows: "Shorten the Ladder: * Ladder on a firm and level ground makes that the lowest rung begin. * The two keys to unlock (schedule 4)." [Note: I think "schedule 4" means illustration 4 from the previous page, but it's just a drawing showing the release buttons.] Aside from the grammatical issues, this does not in any way tell you or illustrate how to retract the ladder properly, which is a serious shortcoming. Although the Amazon page for this ladder contains some additional information about retracting the ladder, even that description is not very clear. In any case, I believe the instruction manual should be the one place that most clearly helps a new owner understand both the proper extension AND retraction methods to avoid frustration and potential problems. I suspect few people are likely to go to the Amazon product page to seek more information about this. Summary I think this ladder does its job very well, and once I figured out how to use it, it did its job well. I used it confidently and felt safe on it. My only concern is that the manufacturer should improve the instructions to make its use more understandable and clear. ... show more

This ladder functions well, and all the extenders work. It's sturdy and safe so far in the dozen or so times I've used it. I have noticed that a couple of the latches are a little wiggly but as long as nobody touches them they stay engaged, they also are on different levels so it wouldn't collapse the ladder even if they failed. Just something to note that maybe they cut a few corners with the quality assurance on this ine, but overall it's a solid product. ... show more

I love this 12' ladder's super convenience compared to my current 16' heavy-duty, aluminum, German folding ladder. You just keep pushing out the steps/segments to the height you want. When you're done, you simply push each segment's two buttons in for the rest of the ladder to come down by that one step. The ladder is missing one feature that would make it more enjoyable to use: a wider base. When you're near the top of this 12' ladder, it doesn't feel all that safe - especially if you're leaning against walls with not much friction, you worry about lateral movement. For that reason, I will probably continue using my German ladder for outside work - since it does have extenders to give the ladder a wider stance - and use this ladder for indoor jobs where there's no wind to contend with and where I won't need to carry heavy items onto our roof. ... show more

    • Works great except closing it up

This is my second of this type of ladder. I actually like using this type in the garage to reach storage in the attic. When not in use it collapses so small it's the easiest ladder to store. They are easy to use. For my garage I start with the 4th rung from top and pull up all the rest from the bottom. My other ladder of this type had to work that way as top rungs collapse when you close a lower one. But my other ladder has a soft close feature. It slowly collapses. This one you must keep your fingers out of the rungs as it collapses quickly and hard. But the problem is I find I want to put my thumb on the rung when I use my index finger to slide the lever to open it. Been close a few times... Each rung is pinned separately, undoing one does not affect the others above or below. My other ladder actually started sticking recently taking extra effort to close it up. This one you could smash a finger. It's a toss up which it better but they both work well as ladders and store in a small space. ... show more

This ladder is sturdy and unlike may others stores in a small space. No more putting flags on the end sticking out too far from your vehicle. I may have to get rid of my other ladders that are taking up so much space when not in use.
