  • WARNING!!! Can cause Neurological Isses!
Flavor Name: Chicken Size: 5.5 Ounce (Pack of 12)
We are extremely careful what we feed our cats. We thought the Instinct looked like a good brand. It smelled tasty upon the initial opening of the can, but in just a few hours, if plastic wrap was not placed on the food to keep out oxygen, it quickly developed a nasty, spoiled, unappealing smell. We have what appears to be a purebred Turkish Angora cat who literally showed up on our back door as an approximately 8-week old starved, wild, and extremely ill kitten. It took about a year to get him healthy. We were feeding him another high-dollar cat food and he suddenly started declining in health. So we switched to the Instinct cat food. After about 14 months on this food, he suddenly developed bizarre and puzzling symptoms: staggering when he tried to walk, hallucinating, not eating, snot and fluid coming out of his nose, sneezing, breathing heavily, heart racing, and finally extreme weakness, to the point that he could no longer eat, walk, or even get in the litter box. The vet ran a lot of tests and charged us big bucks only to tell us they didn't have a clue except to suggest various possibilities. We wouldn't know without running hundreds of dollars worth more of tests. We figured that we could guess as well as the vets, at much less cost and treat him with natural solutions, especially after he almost died from a long-term antibiotic they gave him. We began reading everything we could on anything remotely similar to the symptoms we were seeing in our cat while we carefully syringe fed food and water to him and held him up in the litter box. When I read the Amazon reviews on the Instinct cat food and the Montmorillonite clay, alarm bells went off. Even though we weren't sure it was the clay, we immediately took him off of that food. However, he had been consuming it for 14 months, so the cumulative impact on his system was huge. We treated him with many holistic formulas to slowly detox his little body. It took six months, but he was almost back to normal. We decided to test the Instinct food one more time since he was doing so well, and again, we were not sure that the clay was the culprit. He was playful, active, and healthy but in only TEN days on the Instinct, he suddenly tanked again, staggering wildly as he weakly tried to walk, hanging his head and wrinkling his forehead like he had a horrible headache, hallucinating, and finally getting so weak that we again had to hand feed him and hold him up in the litter box. So SOMETHING in the Instinct food, whether it is the Montmorillonite clay or something else, is extremely toxic to him. Being what we think is a purebred, he may be more sensitive to food ingredients in cat foods than our wonderful "Heinz 57 mixed breed barn cats". We greatly appreciated the other reviewer (Title of "Deadly") who shared their experience with their cats and dogs, including confirmation with the vet of the Montmorillonite clay and how the high acid in an animal's stomach leaches out the toxic heavy metals in the clay, where it accumulates in the animal's system. Liver failure as well as other organ failures over time, and immune system issues can be the result. This review is what gave us a clue to what was happening with our cat. We continued with more research on our own, but after this second episode with the Instinct, we concluded that the Montmorillonite clay in not a healthy or safe ingredient for cats or dogs. ... show more

  • Maggots in cans
Flavor Name: Chicken Size: 3 Ounce (Pack of 24)
The media could not be loaded. We have been getting this food for months on through Subscribe & Save without issues. Until this past shipment where we have cans that are crawling with maggots inside them. Expiration date July 27, 2020, no sign that anything is wrong from the outside. I didn't pay attention at first when I fed my cats and didn't even notice until later when I saw their food dish wriggling. Absolutely disgusting. Amazon did right and refunded our money and I cancelled my subscription. You read other reviews and think it won't happen to you, but it can. I would avoid this food- lots of people having similar experiences with maggots or with mold. ... show more

  • Thanks for yet another chance! :X)
Flavor Name: Chicken Size: 5.5 Ounce (Pack of 12)
Bailo, our 19 year old cat was on the last leg with failing kidneys, a urine infection, sensitive stomach and continuous throwing up. A cure with antibiotics & this feed was part of her coming back and now being able to eat without throwing up anymore. Older cats are more sensitive. She is even back playing now. Her kidney condition will not go away but she is happy and better, that is what matter to me at this point. Thanks! ... show more

  • Cans we’re spoiled - both online and from a store
Flavor Name: Chicken Size: 5.5 Ounce (Pack of 12)
A few months ago I got 2 new kitties and so I went to the store and bought a variety of canned cat food to see what they like, including Instinct. They really liked the chicken, but one kitty threw up all over after eating the beef. There was some whitish gray stuff on the top and I wasn’t sure if that’s how it was supposed to be or if there was a problem with that can. Anyways, since then I’ve continued to buy the chicken. When this most current order arrived I noticed some whitish gray spots on top but wasn’t sure if that was from processing. However, 1 kitty threw up again. When I opened another can it also had the spots on top and the kitties wouldn’t touch it. It is my assumption that these cans were spoiled. It looks like I’m not alone in having this problem. That’s terrible! The can still had 2 years until the expiration date so they weren’t expired. I wonder about the stuff I can’t see that could be in the food. One of my kitties frequently has the runs. And now I wonder if it’s related to this food. Wow. I will never trust Instinct again. ... show more

  • This basically transformed my cat
Flavor Name: Duck Size: 3 Ounce (Pack of 24)
My poor cat is allergic to chicken (yes, really) and this is one of the few brands I found with NO chicken by-product at all. (except the chicken flavor, duh). I switched to this food and his fur went from soft to HOLY SH**, chinchilla-on-a-cloud, shiny, silky, magical fur. Seriously. He's so pretty and his fur and whiskers glisten in the sunlight. I give him a generous spoonful of this a day (he's a little guy) and he also has a bowl of dry Instinct (salmon and rabbit) that he gets free reign over. Apparently cats aren't really meant to eat a lot of dry food, so I started giving him this in the morning and he eats much less of his dry kibble now. Basically, if you love your cat and care about their little tummy, you should buy this. It's rich and full of nutrients, they don't need or eat as much of it, so the cost is pretty much the same in the long term. Plus, the trans-fur-mation and improved longevity is worth it. ... show more

  • Unsafe Cat Food - Lots of Sharp Bone Chips
Flavor Name: Duck Size: 5.5 Ounce (Pack of 12)
I purchased several cases of this food for my 4 cats to vary their diet. What did I find in this expensive cat food? A ridiculous amount of chipped bone. Worried that my cats would cut their mouths, I have been picking bone chips out of this food before feeding. It's a disgrace. I would expect this junk to come from a disreputable factory in China, not a major US cat food source. Apparently quality control is absent at Nature's Variety. My call to the manufacturer was totally unsatisfactory. I was told that it's normal to have bone shards in cat food. Tell that to your cat with a bleeding mouth. ... show more
