  • Great on many different levels!
I really enjoyed reading this book. The entire book is fast-paced and well-written, and many parts are laugh out loud funny. Ostensibly giving readers a view into the world of a motley crew of valet parking attendants in Oahu, it is truth so much more. The main current of the book is about a narrator both seeking something more from their life while also seeking to embrace the life they are already living. The protagonist floats between different worlds. In one world, he is attempting to teach students writing at a prestigious private high school in the summer. The characterizations of the students are hilarious and show the writer's own capacity for self-deprecation and self-reflection. In his other life, the protagonist is surrounded by an earthy mix of locals. These characterizations are also classic and run the gamut from the comically absurd, to the rootsy, to the heartfelt. As someone who loves Hawaiian accented English, it was a great pleasure to 'hear' the different voices of characters in the book, especially the use of pidgin and slang. The book is a great read for someone visiting Oahu. A visitor would be able to easily identify many of the locations referenced in the book: the ko'olau range, waianae, waikiki hotels, north shore beaches etc. The book strikes the perfect balance between absurdist comedy, which makes it a light summer read, and heartfelt reflection, which is often the headspace I'm looking to get into while traveling. Ultimately, the book is about building a family, finding a purpose, and embracing one's community. The protagonist's nickname is 'Rumi', like the Persian mystical poet, and the arc of the book is about how he reclaims his own excitement and passion for life; revivifying his own relationships in the process. Like I said, a great book. Whether you feel like traveling to paradise through a good book, or want a good book to read while traveling in paradise, 'Sitting in the seat of a stranger's car' will leave you laughing, wondering, and wanting more. ... show more

  • HILARIOUS!!
Once upon a time in my youth, I was a valet and the author nails the nuance of this small enclave of the service industry. For me, it was a real treat to delve into this nostalgic world with such a whimsical, smart take on life in Hawaii. I began reading this as a prelude to getting a goodnight's sleep on a Sunday evening and ended up not being able to put the book down! So many entertaining characters and so much great dialogue, anyone familiar with Hawaii would have fun reading this book. Love it!! ... show more

  • 5 stars! Engaging, funny, honest. A true sliver of life in the shoes of a valet.
Growing up and working in Hawaii has its unique qorks. Working as a valet has its own special code of things that come along with it. This book highlights those “special” things in a hilarious way. Beau does an amazing job at painting a vivid picture of these unique characters and story’s that all valets endure/experience. If you ever paid for a valet, parked a car, lived in Hawaii or even travelled there... this book is for you. 5 stars. ... show more

  • genius and brilliantly written!
This book does a great job capturing the complicated and comical dynamic between working in the service industry, living in a cultural melting pot, and falling in love. I found the premise of a hodgepodge mix of valets who opt to co-parent an abandoned child absolutely brilliant. I took this book on vacation with me and found it so easy to breeze through. The short and focused chapters keep you turning the pages and jumping in deeper to the adventure. I highly recommend :) ... show more

  • ALL HEART!!!
I truly enjoyed this; some amazingly EPIC lines/moments in the book that’ll stay with me forever. The book was super funny yet heartfelt and heavy at times filled with a lot of very well written imagery and deep love and compassion for the characters. The protagonist’s view on life and love was one of a thankful heart, thankful for just being; an incredible fiction novel drawing so many real life parallels to the world and our souls. Thanks Beau Flemister ... show more

  • Best book I’ve read in ages ... movie hopefully?
This was my favorite book of the year! Very well written, fast paced and laugh out loud funny. Gives the reader an inside view of a different Hawaii than seen through the eyes of a tourist. I’m anxiously awaiting a second novel from Beau Fleimester or can totally envision this book as a movie in the future. ... show more

  • A perfect blend of beauty and humor
Whether or not you've been a valet, visited Hawaii, fallen in love, or had a kid, you need to read this book. Thank goodness Beau Flemister decided to become a writer because only he could've delivered this story that's equal parts funny and beautiful.

  • Such a good read!
Great glimpse into small parts Hawaiian culture and what life is like on Oahu. Great mix of a lot of different elements....and you get to learn all sorts of cool local slang along the way. I found myself laughing, crying and speeding through the book. The chapters seem to fly by. Beau's writing makes you want to meet each character in real life. So glad i purchased this book.
