  • Makes mixing in headphones easier
Works great

  • Confidence in the quality of mixes
Works as advertised. I'm in a living situation that does not allow for speakers to be used as monitors, so headphones are my only option. ARC On Ear has given me a much greater confidence in the quality of my mixes. I feel it was money well spent and am sure this item will serve me well for years to come. Build quality is awesome. ... show more

  • Surprisingly useful little box for getting more accurate headphone sound
I’ve only been using the IK Multimedia ARC ON•Ear for a few days, but honestly, it’s already surprised me more than I expected. I wasn’t sure what I’d get out of it beyond “another DAC/amp with a couple EQ tweaks,” but the way it handles headphone correction and the built-in presets actually makes a noticeable difference. What stood out right away The calibration profile for my headphones tightened things up more than I thought it would. The biggest change for me was the low end—less guesswork, more clarity. I could hear where things sat instead of everything being slightly hyped or muddy like headphones tend to do naturally. It didn’t feel like a forced or heavy-handed EQ curve either… more like someone quietly corrected the flaws my ears had gotten used to. The various presets are genuinely interesting. I expected them to be a novelty, but switching between “studio monitor,” “living room,” or “car-style” listening gave me a better feel for how things might translate in real life. It’s not a perfect replacement for real monitors, obviously, but it’s helpful when you’re trying to judge how a mix or a reference track carries over. Day-to-day use so far The device itself feels solid, and I like that it’s extremely compact. It doesn’t feel like some cheap dongle—more like a proper piece of audio gear shrunk down for travel. Controls are simple, and once you set up your headphone model, it’s basically plug-and-go. Battery life has been fine for my shorter listening/editing sessions, though I wouldn’t expect all-day use without a cable. Things to be aware of It’s not going to make your headphones magically behave like physical speakers in a treated studio—that’s just not possible. But what it does do is make headphone listening more reliable, especially when you don’t have a great room or you’re working late and need to stay quiet. Also, its correction profiles work best when your exact headphone model is supported, so if you’re using something obscure, the benefits might vary. Bottom line after a few days For something this small, it changes the way I trust my headphones. The improvements aren’t subtle, and the preset swaps have actually been fun to play with. It’s a cool new tool if you rely on headphones a lot, whether for editing, casual mixing, or just wanting a more accurate listen. I didn’t expect to like it as much as I do, but it’s already earning a spot in my everyday audio setup. Price is up there, but when you compare to a new set of headphones, it really is not bad. Volume is also very helpful, no issues! ... show more

  • A studio in your pocket
IK Multimedia’s ARC On-Ear portable headphone correction system is basically a tiny studio that you can carry around with you. While I’ve been very familar with modeling amps for guitars, I had not seem this same sort of technology deployed for mixing, and it’s pretty brilliant in the execution. You’ll need a computer to unlock the full suite of amazing that this device can deliver - without a PC or Mac, you’ll be very limited, and as of the time of this review, there’s no iOS version of the ARC On-Ear software. With it up and running, you can load 5 different preset configurations for your device. These can be a huge range of calibrations (from neutral to bright or warm, with a phase alignment toggle), studio spaces (with different angles to your ears and an optional ambience toggle), as well as over 20 virtual speakers. You can toggle any of these settings off or on with dedicated buttons on the device (button #3 is assignable - I ended up setting it to the virtual speakers as I used that function the most). Lastly, you can set your headphone from a huge list. When you start listening, you can also adjust the frequency response of the headphone profile, with easy reference to see how you’re deviating from the default headphone frequency response profile. With the 5 presets, you can have 5 completely different virtual spaces set up, with the ability to tweak each one as you listen. It’s almost overwhelming, in a cool way. If you’re remote and using your phone for the audio source, you can still use the included USB-C cable to connect, but you won’t have the benefit of being able to see or tweak settings beyond turning off an entire function (calibration, studio, etc.). The ARC On-Ear also works well as just a portable DAC/amp, so when you’re not on task, you can still enjoy vastly improved sound through your headphones. Battery life is rated for 4 hours, which is consistent with my experience. This device is also all about the wires, so there’s no bluetooth functionality. It comes with a great hard-side storage case that has room to hold the cables and unit, which makes it really easy to keep handy when you’re out and about. The unit itself is also rock-solid, which gives piece of mind - you can feel that it’s built to last and perform. ... show more
