  • Easy to build
Great functionality for the price. Need decent soldering skill as some of the connections are small. Works wonderfully.

  • Parts inspection
Finally put it together, which went fine. Had a little issue putting it into the provided case, looks like the elec. caps didn’t get close enough to the board. But that’s ok for now. Unable to very the output do to one of the connections for the output is damaged, the clamp piece ( insert) is missing. Still trying to figure out how or find a replacement part. So make sure you check all components for any damage before assembling ... show more

  • What is most important to know?
Not bad for the price, but there are some issues/discrepancies. An instruction sheet is provided with the materials callout (BOM) on one side and a schematic on the other, and these don't necessarily match. The BOM does match the supplied parts kit. 1) The schematic shows a 100K value for both frequency pots, but the BOM/kit has a 50K for one of them. 2) The schematic shows a 2x4 header, but the BOM/board is a 2x5 (10-pin), thus the 101 (100pF) cap is incorrectly shown in parallel with another cap on the schematic. 3) The design is such that the amplitude (AMP) pot operates in reverse, turning clockwise reduces the amplitude; whereas the two frequency pots operate correctly (none can be installed backwards). 4) There is a DC offset of VCC/2 on the sine/triangle output that is not mentioned/documented (your input device should have a series input capacitor, or add one at the generator's output). 5) No instructions included for assembling the box, just another little puzzle (use an X-ACTO knife to scratch and peel-off the backing paper). 6) The provided board screws (with nus) are not long enough to account for lead protrusion on the backside of the board (#4-40x3/8" or 1/2" are good). It took about 1 hour to assemble, but some soldering experience is required, and the board works as designed with the parts supplied. There are no surface-mount parts, all are through-hole type. An IC socket is supplied for the 2206 chip; note these are not the original XR-2206 IC that are obsolete, as such, these copies are limited to +12VDC max input else strange behavior may arise. All of the frequency ranges work well and slightly beyond the indicated ranges. ... show more

  • They are still having issues with production
Two of the four screw holes were missing. The left side could not be bolted together. Also 3 mounting slots for the left hand side panel were missing so the left side could not be installed. All components were present. I tested all of the passive components before assembly and it did work once assembled. ... show more

  • Very nice.
I had an old hard 3.5 hard drive from a broken DVR. This case was exactly what I needed to give it a new life as a large backup/extra storage drive. Assembly was easy. It came with all the parts needed including a screwdriver. It included extra screws and rubber feet which is nice - in case you drop something. It looks nice. It seems to be high quality. The USB 3.0 worked flawlessly. Works well with all of my devices. ... show more

  • Not counterfeit XR2206 - assembly hints
I bought this slightly more expensive kit than the Gearwoo XR2206 because the reviews mostly said it didn't work due to a counterfeit chip. You'd think all of these kits would be exactly the same and it is pretty cheap in any case, but I spent a few more bucks to buy the one with better reviews. The chip looks good to me and operates as expected, so the kit is good. A fair amount to solder together, but not so much it wasn't fun to put together. Pretty amazing for just $10. Mine worked immediately after construction. I tested it by putting at the lowest 1-10hz setting and attaching my analog meter. I could see the needle bounce up and down according to the frequency. When assembling, you need a magnifier to read the capacitor values and a multimeter to read the resistance values. When mounting the big electrolytic cap, make sure you press it all the way down to the board, otherwise the case won't fit. You can bend the "wings" of the pots together to hold onto the board. The small screw/nuts just go onto the small board to make it stand up from the bottom of the case. The large screws are for the outside, be careful when tightening, you could crack the case since the screws attach directly to the case. It is a bit of a Chinese puzzle box to figure out which directions the pieces go. I ran it with a 100MA wallwort. I tried directly driving a earphone and speaker, but that didn't work. I connected a 1/8" headphone jack and fed it into a small guitar amp which made it so I could hear the signal. ... show more

  • Mechanical hardware parts missing.
All electronic parts were present. However, the hardware to assemble the laser cut plexiglass case wasn't present. The frequency band and Sine/Triangle jumpers were not present, and on 2mm, not 0.1", centers. After assembly, everything worked except, as noted by others, the amplitude knob turns CCW for increasing amplitude. Easy to fix, but annoying. Assembly only took about 20 minutes, and the XR2206 continues to be amazing after 50 years. ... show more

  • Missing component.
It didn't come with all the components. C5 is missing. Update: after installing the correct C5, the output sine and triangular waveforms are distorted.
