I have not put this together yet, but I already love it. These are real wood, contrary to what some people have said in their reviews. No offense to anyone, but if you have not had a lot of experience with different types of wood and woodwork I can see why there would be some confusion about that. This is simply a lightweight variety of wood. It does have a smell when it is opened… If you go to your nearest home-improvement store and open a can of wood stain you will smell the exact same thing. Like others have said, if you just leave that bookshelf, in an open area for a few days, the smell will go away. This is not one large, solid piece of wood, but two thinner pieces of wood glued together for each slab. The slabs are not perfectly smoothed: as you can see in the pictures they are roughhewn. However, they have been sanded and finished nicely. They are just rough enough to look good. I will certainly be buying more, particularly considering the fact that you can pay at least this much for MDF products.
