Description

The Hoya Variable Density filter uses two polarizing layers to control the amount of light that passes through the filter and into the camera lens. At it's minimum effect the filter passes 1/3 of the light in a scene. That is equal to 1.5 stops on the aperture or shutter speed. At it maximum effect the filter passes just 1/400 of the light in a scene. That is equal to 9 stops on the aperture or shutter speed. After the filter is mounted on the lens, turning the filter ring between Min and Max can greatly control the amount of light entering the lens. With the Hoya Variable Density filter it is possible to shoot with fast lenses like a 50mm f/1.4 lens wide open at f/1.4 in full sun for a very shallow depth of field. Or, to slow down the shutter speed to where the shutter can be open for several seconds in full sunlight. This is enough to create artistic blurring shots of motion on water, cars, people or almost anything that moves. The creative possibilities are endless. • Buen filtro... pero no tanto
Size: 72mm
... show more

  • It works reasonably well
Size: 62mm
If you have read many reviews about this filter, I am sure that you have heard about the cross that can appear across your photo although I feel it more closely resembles an "X" laid on it's side with some warping to it. And yes, this X does definitely occur, especially with the wide angle lenses. However, this problem does not occur at all adjustments. For example, if you are shooting a 21mm lens, you can still get about 5 stops out of the filter without seeing any intensity distortions. If you are shooting at 27mm, you can get 6 stops out of this filter without any problems. Once you get to about 70mm and above, you can really get at least 7.5 stops or maybe 8 with no issues. The big plus I felt regarding this filter is that I did not find any color distortions or chromatic abberations as I have seen with other ND filters I have had previously. In addition, this method is using two polarized filters which can be very nice with removing glare, especially out of water shots, while slowing down the shooting speed to get the nice smooth and calming look in your shot. ... show more

  • Would not recommend for serious photography
Size: 82mm
Gear: Fujifilm GFX 100S + GF 23mm lens. I purchased the 82mm ND filter and tested on my fujifilm camera with a wide angle lens 23mm. The test photos were shot in a cloudy day. The left photo was taken with the filter with the maximum stop and the right one was taken without. Both were taken in the same location with tripod. I would say the filter does an OK job given its price point but it is definitely not recommended for serious works. The filter caused a visible degradation in quality and clarity. It somehow shifted the white balance to warm as well. Based on my experience, I wouldn't recommend any filters less than $150 for serious work in general. ... show more

  • Know what you are getting
Size: 82mm
Just got this filter last week. Before ordering it I did fair amount of research and realized that ND filters come with set of issues, vignetting, possibly a dark X in the picture, a dark blob in middle of the picture, color warming, etc. So when I used this filter, I was a bit shocked because within couple of hours of use, ALL THE PROBLEMS that I feared, showed up, the vignetting, dark X in middle of the picture, and color warming. Color warming is the most annoying of all. Sure if I spend enough time processing the picture, I can tone it down, but I don't want to be spending hours processing the picture. Having said that, the problem DOES NOT OCCUR every single time. There were occasions where the filter actually WORKED. Mainly with even cool light at a waterfall, and sunset on overcast day where the light was cool, it did allow me to take long exposures without ruining the picture. So the lesson here is that there are mainly NO ND filters that are issue free. The good thing about the problems mentioned above is that I could see them right away after I took the shots in the view screen of my camera, so I could change settings and respond. It would have been terrible if I missed my shots and problem showed up only during processing. So in my view, it is good to have this filter and use it sparingly. When it DOES WORK and you get a shot you really want to capture, it would allow you to capture something magical which otherwise you won't be able to. Also, this particular one does not break your bank. However, if you use it frequently, you are bound to ruin many good shots. ... show more
