  • Very nice filter
Size: 77mm
Very nice filter, no apparent halos or ghosting. Iv'e seen reviews about these coming with "fingerprints" on them. Those aren't fingerprints, its was on ever one of my filters, its residue from the packing foam. The just need to be cleaned before fitting on the lens and they work fine. I recommend using ROR (residual oil remover) lens cleaner. ... show more

  • Works well without causing any artifacts or vignetting on the Sony FE 4/24-105 G OSS lens.
Size: 77mm
Had tried another UV filter that I had got free with the lens purchase on my Sony FE 4/24-105 G OSS lens and found that it was causing some vignetting even though it was a slim filter. Did some research and came across a site that did extensive testing of UV filters that were priced cheap to pretty high and the reviewer there too said that he was very surprised at how good this Hoya 77mm HMC UV (C) filter was and is one of the best even when compared to the pricier filters. I have used this very same filter (albeit 72mm) on my Sony 2.8/16-50 SSM lens used on my A77 camera and never had any issues or complaints. Based on my personal experience and the review I mentioned, I bought this filter and was not disappointed. It did not cause any vignetting and the images are sharp and though it is now said that a UV filter is not really required for digital cameras it just feels safe and not much of an investment to just have it on for a peace of mind that the lens will be generally protected from minor nicks and scratches. Though this can be easily achieved by just having the lens hood on at all times. Well all that said and done, I'm going to have this on my lens forever! ... show more

  • Slim, light & clear
Size: 77mm
I ordered this filter along with a Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM , figuring a slim filter was needed to avoid vignetting. Indeed, absolutely no vignetting at 10mm. However, once I had the lens, the flange or spacer between the edge of the barrel and edge of the front element is surprisingly large. I suspect a normal filter would not have vignetted either. So I paid a little extra for an unneeded slim filter but no harm done. Normally installing filters is easy but for some reason it was tough to line up the filter threads. Not sure if that is a filter, lens or owner/operator problem... Build appears good and the slim frame makes it noticeably lighter than my standard Hoya HMC filters. It appears to be optically true and well coated for flare suppression. Unlike some reviewers, I didn't find spots or coating defects. However, Hoya coatings more difficult to clean than B&W filters but I knew about that from past experiences. Although the front filter threads are smaller than normal sized filter frames, my 77mm Canon lens cap fits fine on this filter. Nevertheless, the main reason I also use a filter is to protect my front element and avoid using a lens cap. I was surprised the HMC series aren't made in Japan anymore. I own a lot of Hoya filters and this is the first offshore model I've seen (Philippines). However, for a multi-coated slim filter this seems to be a quality product so I'm a happy camper. ... show more

  • Loss of sharpness, use clear filters if you only want protection!
Size: 77mm
I did not have a great experience using this filter. Everything clings to it, hard to clean. I mainly use this to protect my 100-400 II L lens, but am returning it because it degrades the sharpness of my photos a lot more than I expected, and it's quite noticeable in low light, heavy overcast days. I donโ€™t think itโ€™ll be much of a problem for video, or maybe portraits. I mainly photo wildlife, so I need all the detail and sharpness I can get, especially for cropping. I decided to purchase the b+w XS-Pro Clear filter instead, as I personally donโ€™t need the UV filtering and I believe itโ€™s that coating causing my images to be softer. So, if you are looking for a filter just for protection, get a clear filter instead :) ... show more
