Description

Mission-style architecture and furniture, popular in this country shortly after the turn of the century, was an offshoot of the 19th-century English Arts and Crafts Movement. Deploring machine-age artificiality, Mission furniture sought to blend beauty, simplicity, and utility in an organic unity. Today, Mission-style furniture is enjoying a renascence among craftspeople who admire its unpretentious charms. Among the most appealing areas of Mission craftsmanship are lamps and shades. Constructed of wood, copper, brass, and a variety of art glass, they offer delightful period ambiance for home or apartment, and a satisfying project for do-it-yourselfers. This book, an unabridged republication of a popular 1911 manual, offers eighteen complete designs for authentic Mission-style lamps and shades. Written by an expert in clear, straightforward language, this concise handbook shows you how to make droplights, reading lamps, chandeliers, desk lights, dome lamps, and other attractive lighting fixtures. No elaborate equipment is required. Most of the tools needed will be found in the average home workshop or are easily obtainable. Similarly, the materials required are inexpensive and readily available. Easy-to-follow instructions, with complete measurements, are complemented by more than 75 working drawings, diagrams, and illustrations that show you exactly how to proceed. How to Make Mission Style Lamps and Shades allows even beginners to craft authentic Mission-style lighting fixtures with surprisingly little time and effort, and a minimal outlay for materials and equipment. Format: Paperback
I admit I'm a newbie to this but I was expecting more concerning the acquisition of materials and more content on the types of material other than measurements. .

  • Okay
Format: Paperback
Mission style lamps and shades , the paperback $6.99 one. I can figure out the plans to lay out it out, none of the details for the designs on the lamp shades have dimensions, that will require some copy, enlarge, and carbon paper trace. The printing ink is dark in spots, light in others, spacing is off. Cheap printing. Wonder how well the ink on the pages will hold up. I'm just getting tired of the crappy printing jobs, will try to find the original one next time, and not for the $33.00. ... show more

  • Do not buy
Format: Paperback
Do not buy this book. If you're interested in A&C / Mission style lamps, this is not going to be helpful. I realize the paperback price is very economical, but the language is remedial and vague. There are alternate books available that will provide narrative, diagrams, and instruction you will find to be useful. ... show more

  • Good book
Format: Paperback
Good book, although a little dated. Recomended as a start point for those interested in Mission/Arts and Crafts/Shaker furniture.

  • This is the exact same book as "Lamps and Shades - In Metal and Art Glass" by John Duncan Adams
Format: Paperback
This is the exact same book as "Lamps and Shades - In Metal and Art Glass" by John Duncan Adams, also available from Amazon. Apparently the copyright has expired, so anyone who wants to can reproduce this book. This Dover edition is formatted slightly smaller, so the diagrams are smaller, but it's the same book. You certainly don't need both of them. ... show more
