Description

How to Build a Motorcycle leads you through all the key stages – from initially finding the right project for your skill level, to sourcing a base bike and safely taking on some full-on bike-building tasks. With clear, easy- to-follow instructions, proper advice and specially commissioned step-by-step illustrations throughout it is an ideal aid to getting your hands oily. Written by Gary Inman, the co-founder of independent motorcycle magazine Sideburn, and illustrated by Adi Gilbert who is best known for his bicycle and motorcycle drawings whose clients include Harley-Davidson, Guy Martin, Wired magazine, Sideburn magazine and Nike, this is a must-have for all motorcycle lovers. Read this book, even dip in and out where relevant. If it makes sense, schedule some time, clear your mind, pull on some old clothes, grab your toolbox and get going. The chapters in How to Build a Motorcycle will tell you how to complete a huge variety of tasks that will allow even the greenest of novices to get their hands dirty and start modifying with purpose. If you belong to this camp, start with some of the low-input, high-reward jobs, such as fitting bars, swapping the rear shocks or wiring in a new tail light. Even though these require relatively little work, they'll transform the look of your bike, and completing them will fill you with confidence to undertake the more difficult jobs, such as fitting more modern front forks or even making your own frame. The book comes with a glossy 32-page section on finished bikes and is a reference and the perfect gift for all fans, from those who merely like to tinker, to riders taking on a full build. Read more

  • Great Overview of Building a Custom Motorcycle
Format: Hardcover
I am making plans to build a Harley-Davidson Sportster for my first custom build and picked this book up after seeing it on the Sideburn Magazine Instagram feed. It's a great overview of the process of building a custom bike, touching on all the major aspects of what you might get into. The information in it is applicable to pretty much any bike...for more specifics you'll want to get the service manual for your bike plus more detailed references on the project you're tackling (metal fabrication, welding, painting, etc.). This book could easily be twice as thick and still not go real deeply into any one area. This book is also beautifully illustrated! The only photos are in the section at the very end showing some different finished motorcycles as inspiration. I like the illustrations vs. photos...they captivate my imagination more than a simple photo does. I can see this being a reference that I refer back to often while working on my build. ... show more

  • Lot of information packed into this book.
Format: Hardcover
I own 34 bikes currently. These include dirt bikes, choppers, mopeds, scramblers, and high-end touring bikes. After 40 years of messing with bikes, I've gotten pretty jaded with motorcycle books... Loved this one! Packed with information, very cool illustrations, and I've already learned new tricks and techniques. Definitely worth the price! ... show more

  • The title is entirely misleading.
Format: Hardcover
The content in this book is practically useless. One could learn much more about how to customize a motorcycle by watching YouTube videos or going on an Internet forum specific to the bike one wants to modify. I bought this in an impulse because it looked like it might have been a repop of an older publication. I was wrong. This is not a “Nut-and-Bolt Guide to Customizing Your Bike.” For example, the section on how to paint a bike has ten sections. The first is called “Perfect preparation” and is a single paragraph. The second section is titled “Make a booth.” This too is a single paragraph. It goes downhill from there. Wanna pinstripe? There’s an entire paragraph on that. Wanna build a frame? There are 14 whole paragraphs on that, yet not a single one discusses frame geometry. I quick glance at my library shows five books on this subject alone. I ha e read them all and learned something new in each of them. This would suggest that the “Nut-and-Bolt” description of this book is misleading. I wish that I had returned it but as soon as I got the book I scanned through it, set it aside, and forgot about it. It was that memorable. In cleaning up today I found the book and thought I should take the time to write a review to let others learn from my mistake. ... show more
