  • Free lessons and very nice assortment of parts
I'm a mechanical engineering student and was looking for a kit to grow my knowledge in electronics for future projects. This kit comes with a great variety of gadgets and an arduino board, along with free lessons that are super easy to follow. These lessons actually teach the concepts in a way that is easily understandable and keep you engaged. There is also a discord to join once you start the lessons where you can get help and advice from other like-minded individuals. This is one of the best products I've purchased. ... show more

  • This kit is amazing, but the tutorial material is beyond amazing
This is a fantastic kit! I got this kit to help a friend's kid get more into electronics, since they've been tinkering a bit on their own and occasionally breaking a toy or gizmo in the house, we definitely needed a more productive outlet for those urges. I've gotten a few kits like these in the past and gifted them to similarly inclined people and this kit has got to be easily one of the best I've ever seen. You get a sizable box that's just packed full of goodies, and even a meter to test your creations with, which is very uncommon with these kits. Right out of the gate you've got a whole sheet of information about what you're getting and access to an entire library of video tutorials, which goes above and beyond anything I've come across yet. Using their tutorial path you end up walking your student through the basics and right up into some semi-advanced tasks and coding exercises. It's all so seamlessly that they didn't even realize they had gotten fairly deep into the coding side of things and had never touched code a day in their life before then. That says a lot about how well the tutorials are structured. The components in the kit are high quality, and easy to use, and well-marked. There's never any shortage of things you can do with it, and as you get further into the process they start combining things you've learned together and really making you feel like you're building something real. For the money, this is an absolutely mind-bogglingly good deal, just the learning material alone is worth the cost, but getting a giant box of components too? Heck yes. The variety of stuff you get, and the things you can accomplish with it is just beyond amazing, and I can't say enough good about this kit. This company deserves so much kudos for making electronics accessible to everyone. Overall, I'm just blown away, that's all I can say, I've never had so much fun teaching or learning in my life. ... show more

  • Quite the kit; Dozens of parts and tools too; Good choice for learning--maybe for a summer activity?
Quite the kit; Dozens of parts and tools too; Good choice for learning--maybe for a summer activity? ___I have two offspring who have learned electronics from kits like these and from online instruction. This kit is somewhat comparable to those much older kits, but this kit also offers an Arduino compatible board, which leaves you with all kinds of useful possibilities: Maybe an intelligent timer to operate a small greenhouse lid based on temperature, light conditions, humidity, etcetera? Maybe a project taken straight from the pages of Maker Magazine or other online blogs? Take your pick--there are tons of ideas out there. ___The electronic meter they give you is pretty basic, and is the one component I would upgrade if continuing with electronics, but for the price of the kit is durable enough for the short term. ___The box for the parts is also pretty frail, but adequate for the task. If you/your teen/pre-teen takes a shine to doing electronics, he/she will need some compartmentalized capacity for parts, but again, this will work for now. ___What I really like is the ability to design some of your own projects--you are not 100% limited to a per-determined idea, but can generally make your own ideas come to life, OR you can pick some beginner projects from the ideas out there and stick to the script for a bit. ___The Ardrino connection also opens the door to programming basics. If new to BOTH electronics and programming, I would stick with just electronics for a bit and get comfortable there before moving on to programming with Arduino. ___There are video lessons, and of course the kit is well designed to follow that course, should you choose to do so. We had the basics down, so I can not directly comment on the videos, except to say that should there be an issue here and there, you can check for you-tube videos to further enhance a concept. You could also ask the AI bots out there too if you get stuck at some point. There is tons of fun to be had with this, provided you bring some joy and lightness to the table. ___I think this could provide both education in electronics, an idea of logic (electronics and programming both depend on a VERY logical process), and idea of your own projects after some basics are under your belt adds extra fun to this. ... show more

  • Valuable beyond what's in the box Valuable beyond what's in the box
Starting Review: The value is far more than what you get in the box. INCLUDES: This electronics start kit by Horizon Uno contains materials that you'll need for an online course (included in the purchase of this kit) to learn the basics of electronics. This includes a breadboard, wires, relays, LEDs, displays, even a multimeter, and a lot more. The only things that I saw that it didn't include so far that was required was 4 AA batteries to power the battery pack, which is more than fair. It comes in a neat plastic carrying case, about 9.75 inches wide by about 7 inches by 3 inches deep. There's an embedded removable tray for extra organization. THE COURSE: I've only skimmed the surface of the course, but it is EXTENSIVE. There's a digital "Project Book" that is 164 pages long by itself. The course itself also contains documentation that goes with the instructional videos, which seems to have 60ish modules of video lectures, labs, discussions, and even problem sets. I'm legitimately impressed by how extensive it is! For the sake of the review, I skipped ahead to the first lab to see if the components actually work, and though I didn't test every single component, I can confirm that the components that I DID use absolutely worked! And, though I bumbled through it due to my lack of experience, I was able to follow the instructions well enough to successfully complete the first lab. The only "criticism" I would have is that the video may be improved by zooming in further on the breadboard to see where the components were being inserted better; however, the linked documentation helped clear up that issue. OVERALL: The kit complements the course to make it both fun and functional; I would highly recommend this for anyone who is interested in learning the basics of electronics. For younger children, I think it might benefit from some adult supervision to help make sense of things at first: for example, it took me a second to realize that the breadboard that I had didn't quite match up to the illustration (based on where the positive and negative rails were, the numbers and letters were oriented in the "wrong" way). Overall, though, I appreciate the detailed instructions and am really looking forward to learning these lessons! ... show more

  • Electronics and Arduino Starter Kit with online lessons Electronics and Arduino Starter Kit with online lessons
This is a nice complete kit of almost everything you need to do all of the online lessons that are included with the kit. It includes various sensors, lights, resistors, capacitors, semiconductors, experimenter board, various circuit boards, wires, potentiometers, test leads, digital Volt Ohm Meter, and more. The lessons require creating an account and then using a sign up code that is included in the kit. The lessons can only be done online, there is not an option to download them for off line use. But that and a set of batteries are the only things missing from this kit. All of the included materials are versatile and can be used for many projects of your own design. Especially the Arduino provides a lot of functionality that can be used to copy a lot of things that can be found using an online search of videos that other people have to demonstrate Arduino programming. This is a good value for learning both electronics and also Arduino programming. ... show more

  • A mountain of possibilities
This kit is great. There's so much in it and included that it's tough even starting on how to review it. For starters, I've had quite a bit of electronics training over the years. I've been training in some corporate environments and had some training from various government agencies. Alot of training I've gotten over the years has used kits like this to introduce PCB basics for diagnostics, data recovery, device repair, etc. I think one of the differences I noticed in this training was that it helped to explain some of the fundamentals of what components do and what the programming is doing whereas I've had a lot of training where it's a series of specific instructions to accomplish a goal without explaining why we were after the goal at all. I've used arduino kits in the past and worked on various projects involving them. I'm not exactly a pro at this particular lane, but I have enough experience using these types of tools. This kit is really great at introducing electronics in a way that isn't super dry or so technical that it's daunting. I haven't completed all of the training courses yet, but from what I have seen so far, the lessons themselves are pretty good. It looks like based off their site, these lessons alone run $20 for the full 59 videos. The instructor for these videos seems interested in what he's teaching and I think that helps a ton when you're teaching. This kit has a ton of potential for tinkerers. Anyone with an imagination for building robots can use the lessons and tools to start putting together some basic systems. The kit has a multimeter, leads, lot of wire connections, resistors, LEDs, the arduino board, sensors, displays, etc. There is a ton here to get started and the instructions are based on the kit you're given so you aren't having to do any additional shopping to make the lessons work. It seems like the people who picked out the components and designed the kit did a good job of giving a variety of components for different projects while making the kit itself affordable. Everything I tested worked as expected. The kit is packed up well and it's impressive the amount of stuff they packed into the kit itself. I think the value for the kit is great, I think the lessons are pretty good, and I think for anyone wanting to learn the basics this is a really good option. If you know someone who loves electronics and has wanted to get into drones, robotics, or general electronics and they're completely new or generally beginners, this kit is perfect. It's a cool kit and you should pick it up to go build cool things. ... show more

  • Good Starter Kit - Compatible with the Arduino UNO board Good Starter Kit - Compatible with the Arduino UNO board
This is an excellent kit for beginners in the world of single board electronic micro-controllers. With electronic micro-controllers you can build many things... thermostats, light, level, inclination, vibration, motion sensors, security systems, printer cartridge programmers, etc. etc. etc; you can even create sound/music ! The Horizon Uno in this set is a version of the Arduino UNO board. It seems to be fully compatible with the genuine boards and the resources available for them. The board included in this set uses the genuine Atmel MEGA 328P, DIP version microprocessor, used in many of these single board controllers. Arduino is an Italian company that provides software and hardware for different single board micro-controllers. There are other systems in the market, such as Raspberry Pi, Nvidia Jetson, Teensy, but Arduino is solid and has plenty of resources online that include books, programs (sketches), project ideas, at no charge. The idea with single board controllers is that you can write your own code (sketch) on your computer using a language such IDE, Python, etc. You then compile the code (convert your code to instructions that the controller board can understand) and transfer it to the board via USB, to make the controller do whatever you want it to do, within its capabilities of course. This kit comes with everything that I could think of, but for the batteries needed for some applications. It includes a power adapter, a breadboard that you can use to test designs before transferring them to a printed circuit board. It comes with a multimeter and probes. It includes a key pad, 3 different displays, joystick (HW504), relay (HW-482), ultrasonic sensor (HC-SR04), mini power supply (HW-131), and microphone (vibration) boards, one Tower One SG90 servo, electronic components, etc. etc. It, comes in its own plastic box, about the size of a shallow lunch box. All the static sensitive boards come in sealed static dissipating bags. There are many inexpensive additional expansion boards available on line. The documentation included in the kit is limited to two business card size cards, shown in the pictures, they refer you to the Horizon Robotics website, where you can redeem the code included in the kit for a free "Electronics and Arduino course". This kit is great, very well put together, and will function very well, of course depending on the circuits that you build and the code you write or download. This kit is an ok value for the money at $50, when you consider the time that you would have to invest putting it together from separate components. I wish it had been available when I began working with these controllers years ago. ... show more

  • Great Hands-On Starter Kit for Learning Electronics
This Horizon Uno Electronics Starter kit gave me a glimpse into what learning about and working with electronics might be like. The kit allowed me to be more hands-on, which I really enjoyed, and it is not overly complicated. The component selection is nice. You get a mix of sensors, LEDs, servos, and other pieces, so you can try different setups instead of doing the same thing over and over. It gives you enough functionality to mess around with and figure things out without feeling like too much all at once. The videos are easy to follow along with, because they go step by step. They show you what you are supposed to be doing every step of the way. The detailing made this so much easier to get off to a smooth start. I never felt like I was stuck, trying to figure out what I missed or whether I had done something wrong. I worked through some of this with my 8-year-old grandson, and he stayed interested the whole time. He needed something that kept him thinking, and this did. It challenged him a bit, but not enough to frustrate him. We sat down and went through it together, which made it a fun experience for both of us. That's really what this comes down to—it's just fun to use. You put something together, run it, and actually see it work, which makes you want to keep going and try more. In terms of a good starter kit, this one offers easy setup, a variety of component selections, functionality, and durability, making this a good value. ... show more
