I purchased this book to give me some ideas toward building our new home. Beautiful pictures of contemporary and old world designs. . I wish that it had included more floor plans, but it was OK. Homes & Courtyards (28, more like 21, Beautifully Designed Homes For Outdoor Living) I deduct one star, because the authors can't count--and it is a marketing lie. Not a deception, an outright lie. These 21 (yes 21) high end homes are presented fully furnished, staged and decorated. So the look is highly finished and brand spanking new. I'd love for them to have included bare wall photos so you could see the spaces without the improvements of the all the coordinated furnishings. The book is heavily photographic. Every page contains large and full page photos or a color floor plan. About half the house have floor plans. CHAPTER TWO is a collection of "On the Board" and half-off-topic projects. I'm not sure why we should care about these. There are two pages of pencil sketches of a mall (no homes); a sketch and overall map of a marina & golf resort (no homes); a single sketch of a retail building with apartments above (ok, I guess the front face of an apartment building counts as a "home"). Then there are single renderings of the outside face of two residences. Then there are four artist renderings of four homes in a complex. No actual floor plans or meaning full details. If you count each single rendering (six) plus the drawing of the mixed-use building (seventh), add the 21 real homes and you'll get the "28" number marketed. I love the Tuscan and Andalusian looks. The later designs are more modern ad less my taste. I do wish they focused more on the courtyard design. Some pictures simply highlight the homes, and not the courtyard specifics of the designs. As a fan of courtyard homes, I thought the focus would be more on that specific element and not another portfolio book. Still, there are elements to observe in these styles, use of variation in material and design elements. They create an incredibly polished look. These homes don't look old at all. They aren't the Tuscan look of a 100 farmhouse in Italy. They are modern built homes but clearly incorporate the elements of older designs. ... show more

For an architectual point of view, it covers superb floor plans, internally it gives you a peek into another world and the out door finishes are to be seen to be believed. These are coffee table books for just not any home, but every home.
