Description

With advances in digital technology, musicians can now produce their own music. But the gear is only part of the equation when it comes to recording and mixing. The next part is finding a soundproof room that you can produce it in. Unfortunately, any old room in your house will not suffice for a quality recording. Without a decent room, you'll never be able to record a studio- quality recording you'll be proud of and be excited to have other people hear. So how do you go about creating a space in your home that has similar acoustics to that of a world-class studio? How do you soundproof this room to keep your sound in and outside noise out? How do you construct or modify the room so that its size and shape best complement its function? This book teaches you how to do all these things, from building a professional home studio to saving thousands of dollars in the process. This book shows you how to design and understand your room - how to treat it, wire it, and condition it while using widely available materials. Each step features visual aids to illustrate underlying concepts, as well as professional tips and examples from actual studios. Everything is covered, from room design to electrical considerations, room treatments to codes, permits, special needs, and more. Read more

  • Build It Like A Pro
Format: Paperback
This is one of the more important books on my shelf and I reference it quite frequently. As a recording studio designer, I like that I can buy a copy for a client with the assurance that I'm giving them a top quality product that is going to provide them with many answers they will have during the construction process, as well as give them a deeper understanding of how the various parts of the studio all work together to create a professional sounding environment. Someone commented that the book didn't meet their needs. I think if you read it carefully, Rod's insight into acoustically treating your space is worth the price alone. One the important points is found in the question "what products should I use to create my studio?" Rod takes you through the myriad of products for which he has hands-on experience, to help you make those (often difficult and confusing) choices. Rod condenses his hard earned knowledge of the essential components of successfully building a recording studio into a cohesive and comprehensive book. Rod has a web site full of useful calculators which (once you read the book and understand why you need them) will help you to quickly work out your own studio design. Even if you're not going to build it yourself, this book is something to share with your contractors so they understand why they may be doing something a bit different than they may typical do. And its the details you find in Rod's book that will make the difference between a high-end solution and a mediocre one. This is definitely one of the important books that you need to have on your bookshelf if you are considering building a professional grade studio, or even if you are designing your own home theater. ... show more

  • Authoritative and Packed With Info!
Format: Paperback
I've read a number of "build your own home studio" books, and this one has impressed me the most by far. It contains tons of useful and very practical information about how to build a good home studio. The info covers everything - acoustic theory, design of the space, material choices, construction techniques, HVAC, lighting and electrical, safety, etc. etc. He goes in-depth into each of these topics too. Some of the content *is* targeted for big studios on big budgets, but most of it also applies to the do-it-yourselfer, so I don't count that as a minus. For example, I will not be cutting existing concrete slabs and excavating and installing footers under the edges, nor will I be floating a new slab over an existing one...but I like knowing how these things are done for a professional studio. He does reference a number of brand names, but I don't count this as a minus either - brand recommendations (from someone with experience) are useful to someone new to studio construction. Bottom line, the guy is a former contractor, and it's obvious from reading the book that he knows how these things are not just designed, but actually *built*. He covers everything in more depth than most of the other books put together. This book is money well-spent. ... show more

  • Home Studio Construction puzzle SOLVED!
Format: Paperback
One of the best books on the market as it relates to home studio construction is Rod Gervais "Home Recording Studio: Build It Like the Pros". This book is filled with start to finish examples of isolation walls, breaks down the acoustic terms that apply to you as a person involved in home studio construction. Rod excels in his chapter on HVAC. This is the most underestimated and often overlooked aspect of an isolated recording room. This is where I learned the most, having already been in the construction field with an understanding of the methods used to decouple and break the path that vibration travels on, the need to damp the interior of a double wall assembly, etc. What I thought I knew about HVAC design was elevated due to just the reading of this chapter. You cannot do this type of work without information that applies directly to home studio construction. So I suggest that if this is your goal even if you think you know what you are doing, get "Home Recording Studio: Build It Like the Pros", by Rod Gervais...why take chances. ... show more

  • Great If Your Serious or Curious
Format: Paperback
This book was recommended to me by a friend who works for National TeleConsultants, Inc., a company that, (as I understood), builds studios in Los Angeles. The book deals heavily with construction, so anyone with that background, or anyone handy that's interested in designing and/or building their own studio would find this book incredibly valuable. For a guy like me, more interested in treating existing rooms that I'm forced to work in, it may not have been the perfect choice. He covers that, but not in a ton of detail, at least not as pertains to my specific situation. But I'm glad I got it and read it. Even as a total layman I found the info intelligible and interesting. Gervais does a great job of conveying potentially daunting info in a clear and simple manner. Even if you're not planning to build or design a studio, if you work in audio then this book is worth reading. If only, like me, it helps you understand why your room sounds like it does. ... show more

  • The only book you need to build a studio
Format: Paperback
I've been building home studios of one sort and another for 25 years from small adhoc rooms to larger custom built spaces. Rod Gervais's book is an encyclopaedia of knowledge that would have stopped me making the mistakes that take twice as long and twice as much to fix after the event. I don't care whether you're a starter amateur or a hardened pro, you need this book if you're building a room. He's written it to allow your ability to decide how much you take in. You can get into serious mathematics of acoustics or just take his easy to use formulae 'that work'. You can use custom cabinets or buy off the shelf acoustic products. Bottom line: Start here before you budget, sketch or pick up a hammer. ... show more
