Top Amazon Reviews

  • Excellent, run a little small
Size: 10 Color: Brown
Originally ordered a 11 non wide based on reviews that they run a little small and narrow. They do. I bought these to replace a pair of Salomon quest 4d gtx that are about 7 years old. The salomons were excellent and are still serviceable, but have some shortcomings I wanted to address. Compared to the salomons which were a 10.5 US hanwag runs smaller and narrower. The toe box in particular. The wides have a 1/16” (per manufacturer) wider toe box which makes a big difference. To match my Salomon size in hanwag I ended up with Tatra ii wide in 11.5 US. My pair was made in Hungary. The first non-wide pair was made in Croatia. I don’t notice any difference in manufacturing quality between them. Compared to the Salomons the hanwags are clearly much better built. The soles are stiffer and grippier on wet terrain, particularly rocks, which the salomons were always a little slick on. Hanwag will require a break in period whereas the Salomons did not. My Salomons are still waterproof as the goretex hasn’t failed. This is the 4th pair, and longest lasting that I have had. Hanwag Tatras have a more cushioned feel all around even though the sole is stiffer. One complaint about the salomons is although they are lighter, after a longish (14 mi) home with a 30lb pack on, my feet always felt a bit beat up due to the lack of sole stiffness and cushioning. I used superfeet green insoles in the salomons from day 1. The hanwags have a little more arch support, and I will see if they require an insole after some additional break in. If these hanwags last even half as long as the salomons I’ll buy another pair as they seem superior and are certainly more luxurious. Salomon has a plastic molded in piece to the outsole which prevented them from being very cushioned and made running in them pretty impossible. Not that you would do a lot of running in trekking boots, but sometimes you might down hill or when you aren’t carrying a pack. The hanwags feel like a very stiffly soled tennis shoe in terms of cushion, which makes it possible to somewhat run in them. Their outsole is also slightly curved similar to zamberlans which helps with walking and kind of propelling you forward. I will update on how they hold up, but the materials and construction seem top notch. I will likely use obenaufs LP on them as it is great on all my other leather footwear and even bags. The hanwags may not breathe as well as the salomons due to the more full leather construction and goretex liner. TLDR: very nice, buy them. Compared to (7 year old) Salomon quest 4d gtx in 10.5US (44 3/4 eu) = Tatra ii wide 11.5 US (45 eu). Tatras are stiffer but offer more cushioning and will require more break in. ... show more
