  • More Hanke luggage to add to my set: love the non-clamshell design
Color: Grey Size: 20 Inch EXT
I have several other pieces of Hanke luggage that I ordered specifically because I love the flap design. Instead of having to open the suitcase like a clam, with all the space needed to do that (unless you want everything to fall out of one of the sections), with this type of case you put it on the luggage rack and just unzip a nice flap near the top of the bag and lean that up against the wall. That's a winner, especially if you are traveling with more than one suitcase. In addition to the checked luggage, I wanted a carry-on size case for short trips where I don't need to check a bag, so I ordered this 20" case. It's a little smaller than I expected it to be, so maybe I'm used to 22" size cases, but I believe it will hold everything that I need it to for short trips, and the size makes it easier to put in an overhead bin. It does have a zipper in the middle for expansion, but I've heard some flight attendants frown on using that feature because it makes the case too deep for some overhead bins. The quality is typical Hanke: the case is well-made but not very padded on the inside and the channels for the handle protrude a bit. This is not a problem for me because I use packing cubes and can stuff a narrow cube between the handle bumps. There is a zippered compartment for a USB battery with a cable that connects to ports on the outside for charging, but it's worth noting that airlines now want you to keep all portable chargers in reach at all times, and you cannot use them on a plane (not a likely scenario anyway, charging a phone in the overhead bin). But the zippered bag compartment certainly is useful for storing small, loose items and the cable doesn't take up much space. The top of the case has a padded section to protect a laptop or a tablet. That's the part you flip up when you unzip the bag, so it's easily accessible. The telescoping handle feels good and sturdy, has hooks to secure a purse or it even allows you to watch an iPad or other tablet while you're waiting for your flight. There's a pop-out cupholder between the telescoping handle, which is a very nice feature. The wheels feel solid and the case rolls easily, but it's worth noting that I put colorful rubber wheel covers on to help identify the case if it needs to be gate-checked. The TSA lock works just fine and is easy to set to to a custom combination. Again, I really like this style with the flap at the top, and this will join my other Hanke luggage, which has held up very well, on trips. ... show more

  • Nice quality, thoughtful details, a little smaller than expected
Color: Jet Black Size: 20 Inch EXT
This carry-on luggage actually ended up being a little smaller than I was expecting, but still useful for short trips and will work for most carry-on requirements. Overall, the quality of the suitcase is just fine, and though fairly basic, it does have a few thoughtful little design features that come in handy (especially for those of us that often need extra hands to juggle everything in the airport). SIZE/CAPACITY: My husband even commented that it looked a little small. I know that 360 roller wheels often take up several inches of the measurement, and that carry-on bags have been getting smaller – so this is a little expected. The external measurements match the seller’s description, but it is the case’s capacity and internal packing measurement that mean the most to me. The internal packing space is 18” long, by 14” wide. The depth is 8” (but there is the option to expand this with the 2nd zipper and that adds about 2” of additional depth. I feel that this case makes up in depth what it lacks in length and width – but it still seems a bit smaller than a typical 22” carry-on (though this is listed as 21.85” carry-on and not a full 22”). I do love that the lid is and that it is flat and thin – so none of the packing space is wasted in the top – it is all in the main compartment. There are compression straps, lid straps (if you have limited space to open the lid), 1 padded laptop pocket and 2 mesh slip pockets. Note that this case does not have a zippered storage space in the lid, but rather open pockets. The telescoping handle works well, as do the 360 spinner wheels. This is easy to maneuver and well balanced. The outer shell is sturdy, textured and a little flexible – but offers good protection to the contents of the bag (no issues there). There are handles on 3 sides (top, bottom, and side) -- which makes this much easier to lift into and remove from the overhead compartment! The main zipper at times is a little awkward to open and close when going around the corners of the bag – but this isn’t really about the quality of the zipper as it is smooth and appears to be of a good quality, but maybe just more about the angle of the corners. In the end, it works fine, just something we consistently noted when opening and closing the case. Extra features: ◾There is a separate zippered compartment with an enclosed cord inside the main compartment on the wall (USB-c with an attached USB-a adaptor) so that you can place a portable power bank in it and then charge your devices via an external port on the top of the bag (which has both a USB-c and a USB-A port). However, this is much less useful if you are flying because of new regulations that require power banks to be visible – so for me it isn’t really of any benefit. But this could be a nice option if you are traveling by means other than flying. ◾The foldable cup holder on the back seems simple enough but I recently found out how very handy that is when trying to get through an airport with a full family – as a mom, any extra help to carry stuff (including my coffee) is appreciated and a thoughtful touch and this helped me tote my caffeine fix about easily without risk of dropping it. ◾The other small detail that I do appreciate are the little bars that flip down on each side of the handle so that I can rest my phone or iPad in it – again, helps keep my hands free in the airport when waiting yet I can still stream shows. At first I couldn’t figure out how to open them, but each one opens separately with the press of the little hidden button above it. So overall I am happy with this suitcase – its quality, balance, ease of maneuvering, and hard shell. I like that it is deep, but I do want to note that this is a bit on the smaller size for a carry-on and doesn't max out the requirements but still has plenty of room for a short trip. ... show more

  • Pretty darn close to perfect . . .
Color: Grey Size: 20 Inch EXT
I have and like several pieces of Hanke luggage and have been waiting for them to come up with just this top-opening, trunk-style design in a 20-inch carryon, and here it is! They’ve done it with their usual thoughtfulness and careful execution. If you’ve ever stayed in a cramped hotel room or needed to get into your bag while on the move, you’ll understand the appeal of this top-opening design, which doesn’t require the space of clamshell luggage. It also works brilliantly on the average in-room luggage rack, which is usually designed to hold just one side of a suitcase. The depth of the main chamber also allows much taller items to be packed and offers greater flexibility in packing arrangements. This bag ticks almost all the boxes for me: top-opening, expandable, bottom handle/grip, with locks on the vertical topside, and a diamond-textured hard shell. It even has a few perks that weren’t deal-breakers for me but are definitely nice to have: bag holders, a retractable cup holder, and cabling for a power bank and USB-A and -C external ports. I tend to check my bag, so I’m curious to see how the cup holder will stand up to the rigors of baggage handling. I wish it was a bit more rugged, but it’s understood that this bag is designed for in-cabin travel, so I can’t complain too much. The power bank cabling is nice to have; it’s located in a long zippered pocket in the main chamber, where you might opt to pack socks and underwear. (Just to be clear, the power bank in my photos is my own and did NOT come with the suitcase.) One thing I hadn’t thought about is that my power bank shuts down automatically after a period of inactivity; a button needs to be pressed to wake it up. This means that I may well need to open my suitcase, retrieve the power bank, press the button, and then pack it back up again in order to power my phone, a series of actions I hadn’t envisioned when thinking about using this feature. Of course, this is an issue caused by my particular power bank and not by Hanke, but I’m just mentioning it so you know. There’s a large, well-padded pocket on the inside of the lid, ample enough for most laptops, I’d think, and a couple of large mesh pockets. Aside from the zippered power bank pocket, that’s it for interior organizational features, and I like it that way. The single compression Y-strap is perfect for keeping packing cubes in place, and the optional 2-inch expansion pushes capacity from 44 to a generous 52 liters. Needless to say, the bag almost certainly must be checked once expanded, but do be aware that the unexpanded depth dimension just slightly exceeds Delta’s guidelines, so there’s always a possibility that you might need to gate-check, anyway. That’s not a problem for me, but YMMV. I love the placement of locks on the vertical top edge, so much easier to manage than when they’re located on a horizontal side. It’s very easy to set the code: just press the button and hold it while setting your code, then release. Handles are comfortable and fit flush against the hard shell, except for the small black gripper on the bottom. At first, I was a bit disappointed that this wasn’t an actual handle like the others, but I now think it’s a smart choice for this to be just a fixed ledge for your fingertips to grip while pulling the bag from overhead. It’s just enough to meet the needs of functionality. Nice. What would completely seal the deal for me with this bag would be latch closures instead of a zipper. This is a good zipper, smooth except for when rounding the corners, but I expect that to improve with use. But latches and a pneumatic hinge to hold the top open would be great! I got the gray color, which is really a gleaming silvery gray and not the slightly blue tint in the online photos. The trolley handle is stable and secure, with little drop-down hooks for holding shopping bags or resting a device while charging, a nice touch. I wish they were just a tiny bit longer, may another quarter of an inch, to allow a bit more of an angle when resting my phone there. So there you have it: my highly personalized nit-picking-over of this very fine Hanke luggage. It’s about ninety percent of the way to my ideal small suitcase, but that’s more than enough for me to be delighted with it. If, like me, you’ve been longing for a top-opening design but found they kept coming up short, take a very close look at this one. It works for me and just might for you, too. ... show more

  • Wonderful Design and Quality! Little Wider than Most Airline Luggage Limits!
Color: Grey Size: 20 Inch EXT
I love the design and quality of this suitcase! Features: — Pop-up water cup holder (9-1/4” circular hole for narrower cups/bottles -- see photo) — 16” MacBook Pro fits beautifully (kindle and/or iPad will also fit with the laptop) -- see photo — Protected charging ports on outside (put own power bank in inside pocket) — TSA lock built into case to avoid being caught in airport machinery — Solid hard outside that is also lightweight — Clips allow the bag top to not touch the floor (see photo) — Can expand 2” in width — Wheels are smooth and roll nicely in all directions — Inside side compartment will fit 32oz Nalgene water bottle with 11” circumference (see photo) — Has convenient hooks that can be used to set larger devices (e.g., Kindle, iPad, long phones) while charging (not stable for shorter phones) — Zipper ends click into suitcase The suitcase also includes a feature where the zipper ends click into the suitcase to avoid snagging on airport machinery (see photo). I recently had a checked bag where the airport machinery ripped off the zipper, totaling my nearly new suitcase! That problem should not happen with this design! CONs: — Zipper is not terribly smooth but seems strong and solid -- Dimensions may not be accepted as carryon Based on the size, I do not know whether this suitcase will be accepted as a carryon for all airlines. The 2026 typical US airline carryon luggage limit is 22” x 14” x 9”. Per the web page (and I can confirm that it is pretty accurate), the 20” luggage is 21.85” x 14.57” x 9.45”. The smaller two dimensions are just a tad over the limit and the suitcase is not very squishy. I suspect it will be okay, since it’s so close, but I haven’t tried it. Overall, I love this suitcase. It has a wonderful design and is high quality. I feel it’s worth the extra money. ... show more

  • Great, simple features that help ease the hassle of traveling.
Color: Jet Black Size: 20 Inch EXT
This suitcase is so cool. My husband has to travel for work every month and takes only a carryon, so this one with all its new bells and whistles is ideal for him. He can charge devices while he's waiting during layovers and even pop out the little device holder on the handle to prop a phone or tablet for watching things. It has a special pocket inside to hold and plug in a power bank (you must provide and connect your own power bank and charging cord to enable your luggage to be used to charge devices). There is a little pop-out cup holder so that you don't have to find a spot for a drink and risk forgetting it or knocking it over during a long wait. It rolls very smoothly and feels durable like good luggage should. I liked that it came in a bunch of colors, but black matched the luggage set we already had. Everything was very easy to figure out how to use and offers some simple and appreciated extra features to make frequent traveling a little easier. ... show more

Color: Bamboo Green Size: 20 Inch EXT
Decent pick if you want a hard-shell carry-on without spending a fortune. It's light enough that you're not eating into your weight allowance before you even pack anything, and the top-opening trunk style is genuinely handy and no fumbling with a zipper flat on the ground in a cramped aisle. • Excellent - Well Priced
Color: Bamboo Green Size: 20 Inch EXT
Hanke continues to impress with its latest offering of roller luggage. I'll start at the bottom and work my way up. The wheels, which is why we get rollers, are designed in such a way that they just...roll. I don't know how else to say it except that we've all had luggage that doesn't on cetain surfaces. These do not have that problem, so already, a huge plus in the portability area. Next, the storage capacity is exactly what you need for a weekend get away. I love the fact that it opens on one side so to speak because it allow you to pack things accordingly, and sometimes, an item might have been too big to fit in the half opening type suitcases. So, it's unique in that way and convenient. Very light weight, it seems to just glide alone. Finally, the quality seems top notch, capable of a long service life. Very nice looking overall, this is the first carry on I reach for when I'm travelling. I really like it. ... show more

I took this on a week-long trip and was impressed. The top-opening design made it so much easier to grab things without laying the whole suitcase open, especially in a small hotel room. It rolls smoothly, feels well made, and the expandable section came in handy for bringing home a few extra purchases. It looks much more expensive than it is, and I’d definitely travel with it again. ... show more
