I'm a huge "Ash"/Bruce" fan! At first, I baught this game just for that fact; but I'm sure glad I gave it more of a chance than just being a fan of the series (of movies and show). I'm not a huge fan of Metroid/Vania type games (I'm not sure if this would be considered that), but man is this game fun and challenging!     • When evil rises....
I love the retro feel. The strategy and fun of the old Castlevania style action. Playing through the 2 characters (4 with dlc) and learning their moves is great. The downside is locked abilities based on level. If you can not progress through those you can not unlock. And some levels have brutal parts. Also the company, Boss Team Games, does not have their act together. Pushing the release date back 3 times without prior warning. So best to buy their games after release. ... show more

    • Castlevania style starring 2 horror icons
So I'd really give this a 7/10 for the rating, over the 4/5 but it's not an option. When I first looked into this game I had read that it was a Metroidvania style, which is fairly inaccurate. I'd put it purely in the Castlevania style as it's a single straightforward level that doesn't really have any backtracking to it. This being said, the level design is actually fairly fun, switching between nightmare and normal modes is interesting (though been done before) and the sprite design is quite smooth. Control is reasonably responsive, though there were times where I felt like it was a little slow to respond so not perfect. My first issue would be that it's not really anything new feeling. If you've played the old Nes style Castlevanias, or anything in that style, you've played this. Main attack with a "sword" of sorts, and item with ammo that you throw. Go through the level, and kind of in a 2d Mario style you are looking for 3 hidden items in each. For what it is, it's actually quite enjoyable and I'd recommend it if you're looking for a tried and true formula. My second issue with this is that Halloween or Evil Dead, both versions are the same gameplay. Yeah Ash has his chainsaw, and Mike has his knife, but they behave the same and both get to switch between nightmare and normal realms. Even at the end of every level when you can use currency to upgrade abilities it's the same purchases. The backgrounds / levels are themed to the respective character, but that doesn't really end up putting a lot of diversity to the gameplay between characters. I have not tried the extra characters yet, but I'm not really expecting that to change things. TL:DR if you're looking for a decent horror themed 2d sprite based Castlevania style game, this is a decent buy. If you're looking for something that's going to give a new style of experience based on the characters, you'll not really find it here. Action platformer fans won't regret this one. ... show more
