  • Sweet Book for Children WITH fathers. Otherwise maybe avoid :(
I love the book, but maybe should come with a trauma trigger warning. I just wish it was only about hair love instead of what a great dad this girl has. My son’s father won’t even speak to him because he’s gay. I got the book to honor his hair and his blackness, but it was a shock to feel so alienated while reading it because the focus was placed on the father. And the end reason for loving her hair is not it’s uniqueness or beauty, it because her hair “is daddy.” I ended up trying to spin it as an example of how he can be a good father to his daughter one day. It’s the best I can do. Needless to say, my idea of supporting his self-esteem and identity kinda backfired with this particular story. However, it was a really sweet story, and I do actually understand why she says that he hair is mommy, daddy, and me. It’s just a story more suited for “traditional families,” over single-parent families, or LGBTQ+ that may not have a dad, or may have two moms, or two dads, etc. ... show more

Very pleased with this Book. Such a touching story. My Great Granddaughter, lost her a few months ago. We were so excited when we found another one. She can’t hardly put it down.

  • The Power of Two Words
I often found myself looking across this book whenever I saw. What did I know? I thought this was just another kids’ book about loving oneself and being proud of one’s African American heritage. Little did I know that there was more to the story. Fast forward to last week’s Oscars and the animated version of the story wins for Best Animated Short. Wow!!! Now, my interest is really piqued. It is time for me to get my hands on this book. Yes, Hair Love is empowering. Yet, it is so much more. The combination of Matthew A. Cherry’s words and Vashti Harrison’s illustrations are simply amazing!! We see a beautiful and young Zuri embrace the strength and beauty in the different looks she possesses, depending on her hair style. (My favorite is the superhero with the Afro puffs). But, I truly felt the tugs at my heartstrings when Zuri and Daddy are working on her hair. It reminds me of when my husband used to “do” my daughter’s hair. There was a bond that developed there that I could never compete with. Cherry’s work not only shares and depicts a relationship between a father and his daughter, he shows the love of one family—the father, mother and child—as well. Bravo. ... show more

  • A father's love for a daughter is precious.
This Academy Award winning creator shares a story that is exactly what the world needs. It features family, love and appreciation for loving ourselves as we are and big hair too. It’s a special day for Zuri. Her thick tangled hair needs to be styled extra pretty for today. She loves her hair even when it has a mind of its own. Braids and beads make her feel like a princess and afro puffs a superhero. With dads help she could have the best hair-do ever. The first, second, third and fourth attempts were a disaster. But, reaching out to the internet because knowledge is power, they find just what they need. This heart felt story shares empowerment, family love and hair love. Young readers will see the power of motivation and determination, not just with hair but with keeping a family together. Imaginative and colorful illustrations share the obstacles and the triumphs of a girl dad helping his daughter. Parents and teachers can use this tool to discuss black hair, culture, styles and even hair care. ... show more
