  • Instructional Book for learning to play the guitar
Format: Paperback
I really enjoyed reviewing this book. I wish that I had a book of this level when I started playing the guitar many years ago. Interactive links are included to help you hear how the lesson should sound. Many helpful tips to super charge your playing. I will be recommending this book to anyone that I give lessons to or if they are just wanting to learn to play. I believe that if you take the time to work your way through the lessons you will be surprised at how comfortable you become in playing the guitar and it will unlock the guitar for you to continue your journey! ... show more

  • Well-Structured and Beginner-Friendly, But Lacks Soul and Spark
Format: Paperback
This is a well-organized, beginner-friendly guitar book. If you've never picked up a guitar before, it gives you exactly what you need to get started: posture, tuning, basic chords, strumming, and some easy songs. Everything is explained clearly and step by step. On that front, it does its job. But let's talk about what's missing. No personality. The tone is painfully generic - no stories, no humor, no quirky moments that make it feel like a real human being wrote it. It reads more like a polished blog post or a corporate how-to guide than something written by a musician who loves the instrument. Learning an instrument is emotional, frustrating, joyful - none of that comes through here. No innovation. The content is solid but entirely standard. You won't find any fresh teaching techniques, creative analogies, or memorable practice hacks. The song list is tired and old-fashioned (Bill Bailey, Oh! Susanna, When Irish Eyes Are Smiling… you get the idea). You could find most of this information for free online - and honestly, YouTube instructors often do it with way more flair. The whole "play your first song in 7 days" claim is an overpromise of simplicity. Keep your expectations realistic. You'll make noise, not music, in your first week - and that's okay. If you like clean, traditional instruction with no distractions or strong opinions, this book will suit you perfectly. But if you're looking for a learning experience with energy, soul, and modern creativity, this might leave you feeling a bit… flat. ... show more

  • The best adult beginner guitar book! Extremely thorough yet easy to comprehend.
Format: Paperback
I received a copy of this book for review. I found to book to be excellent, and after comparing it to other beginner guitar books that are aimed at adults, I believe that this is the best adult beginner guitar book available. The subject matter is very comprehensive, and a great deal of topics are covered so that a beginner can use the book to start their guitar journey. There are videos that can be viewed on the accompanying DVD to help with visualization. All in all this is an excellent book for its intended purpose: teaching adult beginners guitar. ... show more

  • Great Guide to Get Started
Format: Paperback
This is an easy-to-follow guide to learning the guitar. I was able to skip a few chapters and jump in to the level I am at which is great but the book also has chapters that will take you from knowing absolutely nothing to feeling more confident with the guitar.

  • Thorough and easy to understand
Format: Paperback
I like this book. It felt like my guitar teacher was sitting right next to me telling me all his secrets and tips. Ones like how to hold the pick, always tune up and not down, use salt water for your fingertips, the importance of upstrokes, use a metronome, record yourself, etc. And always start slow and speed up when you can. Particularly helpful was the information on strumming patterns where the videos illustrated proper technique. The illustrations are clear and full of information. I like the ones with finger placement illustrations next to the chord chart. The videos were helpful. I liked the ones where I could play along with the songs from the end of the book. All in all this book is easy to follow and leads you from basic guitar knowledge to actually playing a song. ... show more
