Great for beginner off-road enthusiasts!

As an off-road newbie, this is the perfect starter guide to get you going. The trail descriptions are helpful and give you a general idea of what to expect. It's not a comprehensive examination of each trial in fine detail, but it gives you enough info to feel confident in exploring. The color ratings of trail difficulty seem to be accurate, although as the author states, different drivers with different skill sets and vehicles may find some trails harder or easier. The color photos are great and the maps well drawn. They are not detailed enough to be a single source of navigation, however as long as you stick to the trails as shown, finding your way around will not be a problem. It is helpful to have a GPS and a detailed hardcopy topographical map and/or road map as well anytime you head off-road, just as a general safety measure. While this book is a good overview, I would highly recommend looking up the current status of any trails you're thinking of visiting, as road closures do happen. There are a number of excellent on-line trail guides that will supplement this book.

The best trrail guides available.

This is the Bible of off road guides. Wells does an excellent job of describing and rating the trails. If you are planning a trip to any area that he has a guide for, get one. The book is very useful for planning and also as a mile by mile guide while actually on a trail. He rates trails by difficulty and also notes his favorites for scenery. Using those two criterion, I have planned two trips with great success. I own and have used five of his guide books - Moab, Colorado North and Central, California and Arizona. Highly recommended.

Very informative, like breakdown of off road disignations

I like the color code of the difficulty of roads..Green - easy, Red - difficult etc... Also, each trail has the type of vehicle required when travel. Ie: Jeep, truck. quads..etcs. Easy to read and gives me confident to use when trails are travelled. Also, I like the maps that contains hiking trail. I love hiking so this books gives hints on maps to hiking trails.

Information is great, build quality, not so much

I have had several version of this book. If you love to off road, a proper map and trail guide are essential. Rather than relying on GPS, these books give you a fool proof way of navigating the wilds of America, complete with real, first hand experience from people who actually know what they are doing. The book contains information you can count on. It is only let down by the poor construction of the book. For what it costs, I would have hoped for a better build. It was only after a few uses that the pages started to come apart. This happened with each revision I purchased. I ended up re-binding the book in a spiral bind. Even with the bad quality, I still consider this book as an essential part of your trail kit.

These are really good guides

I've purchased a number of these Fun Trek Guidebooks for four wheel drive trails in the areas I'll be visiting. The descriptions and mileages have been right on, even when using an older edition.

Very well done guidebook

Got this as a gift for my dad. We're both avid outdoorsmen and adventurors in NorCal. There was a lot of effort put into this, it's evident just by thumbing through it. All the different areas in CA are broken down into sections, and the sections are all broken down further by trail difficulty ratings. Although it doesn't cover every single area available for off-road exploration in CA, (that would take decades to document) I honestly don't think it could be done better than this.

4x4 must have

had the previous edition, so many great trails driven with it. this one is even better. the spiral bound is a nice touch to lay flat in lap or passenger seat while driving, while previous edition would close on you. also, this one has new trails, including nor/ central california, however, this edition does not have some of the southern california trails that were in the previous edition, and those are some good trails. this edition is also nice cause you can buy a separate sd card from the company and have gps so you dont have to reset odometer and read book while off roading.

Fun Book For Offroad California
Nice design - the spiral bind allow it to fold. Also found the Kindle version usable. This is the authors 100 trail picks. So understand there are lots of trails in CA, this presents a good overview. The author (& friends) update the book regularly and there are updates on the included Website. They do a good job of giving you an introduction and explaining what they can about the trails. Overall, a great way to get started in CA.
