  • After 4 Years of Use...
Color: Tiger/Moonmist Size: Regular
I bought this pack in April of 2017 from Amazon. This was my first frameless ultralight pack that I owned. Generally you see reviews that are submitted soon after purchase and with little usable knowledge of the product purchased. So, I thought I would give a review after nearly five years of use. I think the most impressive aspect of this pack is its price to weight. This pack is a GREAT value. This is a 52 liter pack that weighs on my electric scale at just under 1.2 pounds for 150 bucks! Before purchasing I looked at a lot of packs in this size range as I was preparing to hike a section of the Appalachian Trail. Buying ultralight equipment can be an expensive endeavor. A very popular manufacturer of ultralight equipment charges 425 dollars for a similar sized pack that weights 1.24 pounds. These expensive packs are made with materials like dyneema which are highly water resistant (nearly waterproof), so that is an added advantage. I use a 25 cent contractor bag to line the inside of this Granite Gear pack and voila, waterproof! Is this pack as "good" as the 400 dollar packs? Well, that's difficult to say, but I can tell you that hikers LOVE their gear and can justify any purchase. I can also tell you I have hiked over 150 miles on the Appalachian Trail with this pack and it's never let me down! This pack is extremely light for the price (try to find a lighter pack at this price) and hauls everything I need with room to spare, comfortably. Some people love hauling 50 pound packs (but not very far). That's not for me. I've learned over time that less is more. I carry a base weight in this pack right at 11 pounds. That weight includes clothing, tent, sleeping quilt, and accessories. It does not include consumables (water, food, snacks, t.p. etc.). Fully loaded my pack is right around 17 pounds for a 5 day trip. I wanted to include my weight carry because I cannot speak about the comfort level of this pack loaded with a lot of extra gear and weight. I believe you could carry 25-30 pounds relatively comfortably. As far as durability goes this pack has been solid. The seams have held up and this pack has had a lot of use in all kinds of weather. I also bushwhack (going off trail through briars, scraping saplings etc, with minimal abrasions and wear. I said this was my first frameless ultralight pack at the beginning. I've been looking at the fancier expensive dyneema packs for years, and just keep enjoying this Granite Gear pack. So, if you like ultralight backpacking this is a great deal. Use the extra dough you'll save to buy some other ultralight gear to lighten the load in your pack! I hope this has been a helpful, and I was not paid by Granite Gear for this review. I bought this pack with my own hard earned cash. Happy hiking! ... show more

  • Meh. It’s just OK
Color: Tiger/Moonmist Size: Regular
Broke this pack in over a 4 day trip, 3 different locations, in Pictured Rocks Mi. That means 3 different unpack/pack up styles. Tent, sleeping bag, chair, cold and warm weather clothes, food. Listed at 55 liters this bag feels small and the thin straps are tight, from waist to shoulder harness. I went Ultra Light and that is true. There is nothing to this bag (in a good way) but at that, the pockets lend themselves to be annoyingly just out of reach when on (meaning my buddy grabbed my water all day for me) but held the tent poles, stakes and miscellaneous well. Love the roll down top style but If your filling this pack up to the top, it is not going to be comfortable. Take this with a grain of salt as I am coming off a Low Alpine IV. ... show more

  • 4 star for over 30lbs; 5 star for around 25lbs.
Color: Tiger/Moonmist Size: Regular
Very lightweight; easy to pack; carries around 23 to 25 lbs really well per shoulders and hips. True to the marketing and specs on the product. Took it for 5 day backpack trip and lightest I could muster was 31 lbs. Backpack was just fine, but at 31lbs, the shoulder straps are a little thin. Side pockets are great for getting to stuff you need on the trail. I am happy w my purchase and will take on future trips. ... show more

  • Served its purpose well
Color: Tiger/Moonmist Size: Long
I took this on a trip to Yosemite to hike El Capitan (24+ continuous miles on this route) carrying more than 30lbs of gear and supplies. Pros: -chest and waist straps worked well and reduced weight on shoulders and back -had plenty of room for gear, 2L water reservoir, food -has plenty of straps and elastic pouches to attach things to the outside, add storage or compact your pack job -compartments are easy to access -plenty of storage space for a backpacking trip -when used for a car-camping trip this easily housed 2x sleeping bags (full-size), 2x sleeping mats (backpackable), NorthFace tent (backpackable), an electronic lantern, LifeStraw, Sunscreen, coffee-making stuff, a couple of beach towels, and a few other misc. items VERY USEFUL Cons: -no amount of engineering can make a consecutive 24hr hike with 30lbs+ gear comfortable. full stop. -it would be nice to have a velcro management system for excess strap lengths on the exterior of the pack. A very small and mostly unnecessary improvement. ... show more

  • Great Frameless Backpack
Color: Tiger/Moonmist Size: Regular
I bought this backpack after reading several reviews from Amazon and various backpacking gear websites. I just used it on a recent overnight backpacking trip. The weight of my gear was 18 lbs and the pack carried it well. I used a Z-lite CCF pad inside as the frame. Workmanship and materials look good and I am very pleased with the comfort. ... show more

  • Defective Strap Buckle Assembly
Color: Tiger/Moonmist Size: Short
I'm gearing up for a 4-day hike in the Sierras including Mt. Whitney, and ultralight is key to making it possible. This backpack is one of two that I'm aware of in the 1-pound weight category with 45liter capacity (Mount Laurel designs Exodus is the other). They achieve this by being frame-less - you need a sleeping pad on the inside against your back to make it comfortable. Amazon shipped the last one in my size and it was defective: the adjustments for the shoulder strap lengths slipped when there was any load on them until the back was as low as it could go, somewhere below my butt. The problem was that the webbing was routed incorrectly through the ladder-stops (buckles) and it could not be corrected because the ends of the webbing were doubled over and sewed. In the picture, the moving loop should go around the bar in the center of the buckle, not one it's around. One star off for that. Granite gear offered to repair it if I shipped it to them at my expense. That's poor customer service: shipping a replacement and a return label for the defective one would have been OK. Another star off for that. I returned it to Amazon at their expense. I was motivated to search for a replacement from another company, but nothing could match the specs. I ordered the same thing again elsewhere. ... show more
