Description

Susan Butcher was a four-time champion of the Iditarod Trail sled dog race. Granite was her greatest lead dog, but he didn’t start that way. He was a shy, scraggly pup that the others pushed around, but Susan saw his potential. Together they worked until he became leader of the team. While they were training for the Iditarod, Granite became deathly ill. The veterinarians said he would never be strong enough to run the race. Granite refused to accept this, and slowly he started to recover. By the time of the race he was strong enough to start, but Susan wondered if he could finish the entire thousand- mile race. Confidently Granite guided the team into the lead of the race, when suddenly they were caught in a raging Arctic blizzard. Now Susan and the whole team depended on Granite to get them through the storm. He had to call on all his inner strength and courage to save them—if he could. Read more

  • A wonderful book about courage and determination
This is one of the best books Ive given to my grandchildren. It teaches them to never judge someone on their appearance. It also teaches about courage, strength and never giving up.

  • Much more than a "kid's story"
It's more than a kid's story, it's an affirmation of caring, perseverance, and virtue - things desperately needed in this world today. Anybody who's ever mushed knows that you put your life in the hearts of your team, and if you're very lucky, they give it back to you better than when you handed it to them. This book affirms that and more. It's a reminder for adults and a lesson for children. Simply wonderful. ... show more

  • Wonderful book
My daughter asked for this book after learning about the Iditarod in school. She was 5 years old when we purchased this. They read it at school and she loved it so much that she wanted a copy of her own. This book is a true story and teaches about perseverance, hard work and not judging from outside appearances. A great read for children and adults alike! ... show more
