Description

An Inside Hook Book You Should Be Reading This April "Funny, genuine and knowledgeable about something that meant so much to all of us." —Ben Schwartz A hilarious and nostalgic memoir about the video games that entertain and inspire us, and even hold the power to transform our lives, from an Emmy®-nominated television writer, stand-up comedian and former writer for Nintendo. At the ripe age of three, Mike Drucker got his very first Nintendo console—the Nintendo Entertainment System—and he was hooked. Every video game felt like a new chapter was opening in his life, expanding his world for the better and—sometimes—for worse. Final Fantasy VII, for example, helped him navigate the pitfalls of an early crush. And Dance Dance Revolution taught him how to almost, kinda move his body appropriately to music. Mike split his career between gaming and comedy, landing an internship with Saturday Night Live, playing Wii Sports with the cast and crew, and then a job at Nintendo, where he named an iconic character in the Legend of Zelda series. Then he returned to comedy with a job writing for The Tonight Show, never forgetting the video games that brought him there. In this fond and joyful memoir, Drucker combines ridiculous personal stories and fascinating gaming history to explore the poignant ways that electronic entertainment can save us from ourselves. Good Game, No Rematch is a love letter to video games and the people who play them, from a very nerdy voice in the world of comedy. Read more

  • “Good Game, No Rematch” review
I read a lot of video game books. I was buying and reading a ton of them, and then had so many I had to dedicated a shelf for them specifically. This buying and reading addiction then turned into me writing my own books, which in turn caused me to buy more for inspiration and to support others like myself doing this thing we love. In my quest of buying and reading and writing, I have traditionally found historical and analytical books of games and their development to be a majority of what I got. When “Good Game, No Rematch” appeared on my radar, this was something else. “Good Game, No Rematch” is a memoir by Mike Drucker, but with such an emphasis of stories and moments in his life directly tied to video games, it’s a hybrid between worlds. It’s almost a “coming-of-age” meets “the golden age” of gaming that is instantly relatable. Through personal stories of self deprecation, personal acknowledgment, humor, heart, sadness, celebration , and more, you get to read along and see life through Mike’s words. I genuinely teared up at some of the stories, only to laugh out loud a few paragraphs later. As a lifelong gaming fan, there are numerous relatable moments in this book where I saw myself. It is a time capsule of moments that are gone, but a nostalgic reminder of things I have almost forgot, as well. You can tell Mike is a comedy writer, it’s well crafted and engaging from cover to cover. It’s 304 pages, and doesn’t run on too long or wear out its welcome. Personally, I wanted more and would love to see more chapters from Mike in future editions. If you enjoy gaming books like the ones published by Boss Fight Books, this is something you should absolutely consider. Again, it reads as a hybrid of a clearly personal life story, mixed with someone who’s genuinely a passionate gamer. You can read and feel that Mike has first hand knowledge and isn’t writing to pander or appeal to anyone, this is just who he is. If you are a life long gamer, one who’s gone through generations, saw arcades close their doors, traveled on vacations with your home console in a backpack, or just want to try something else, this book is for you. It’s got my personal highest recommendation. ... show more

  • Hilarious and heartfelt
Absolutely hysterical and entertaining. You will be laughing out loud at least once per page if not once per paragraph. Drucker is a professional comedian and TV writer, and it shows with his poignant observations and phrasing. Also there are some surprisingly warm moments throughout the book as well. I legitimately got misty eyed at least once or twice as well. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys comedy, video games, the 90s or any of the above. ... show more

  • Absolutely hilarious the whole time
This is one of the most hilarious, thoughtful, heartfelt, sad (in a funny way), and hilarious (again) books I've ever read. It's mostly about Mike's life and love of video games, which is so relatable to so many people. An instant recommendation for fans of games or to whoever just wants a great book to read. Drucker is such a great writer at all times in this book, whether it be telling a hilarious and embarrassing story from his childhood to writing a "fake list" about video game manuals throughout the years. Loved it. ... show more

Amazing book. Being a similar age as the author and actually being from the same home town, this book was like reading a version of my childhood.

  • So, so good!
I loved the heck out of this book! Maybe it’s because I’m the perfect demographic (a 40-something white guy who loves video games), or maybe it’s because the stories in this book are instantly relatable to anyone who has had a hobby that marked important eras of their lives. It’s hilarious, which helps it in terms of readability, and also made me think about rough (and great) times in my own past. Please read this book--do anything you can to support this author, because I can’t wait to see what he writes next. I’m absolutely a fan! ... show more
