Lots of fun and can be profitable… very profitable if sold on eBay or Etsy and others… buy it. You won’t regret it. Get Borax and refractory coating and you will absolutely love smelting ... show more

The media could not be loaded. Hands down one of the best purchases I have made, I was concerned about getting a random Furnace off Amazon but this thing exceeded my expectations! I'm still learning through all of this but this kit has everything I needed to get started and so far has taken everything I have tossed in it and rolled with it. I have tried Copper, Brass, Aluminum, and Silver so far and have been happy with the performance. Mine didn't come with Tongs, Crucible, or gloves. It seems well built, but the fire wool material is so thin, I do not think it would ever heat up to melting temperatures. I sent it back but if you can get one that has everything the website says is included, it is a good deal. I would just order some extra KOWool to insulate it. ... show more

11/18/2023: The Pros: Furnace itself seemed very well built, solid. I haven't tried it yet, as it's raining outside--liquid metal and rain are not a good combination. The tongs seem relatively strong, however the securing fasteners didn't work, see cons below. The carrying case appears to very good quality, as do the gloves. Overall I'm quite impressed. I hope that all the parts and pieces work as good as they appear. The Cons: The crucible appears to have a manufacturer's defect/flaw in the side. I am hoping that this doesn't break when it's full of hot liquid metal. The tongs are two-piece, the handles thread on to the tongs. There are hex set screws that are supposed to lock the handles onto the tongs. One had a missing screw, the other immediately stripped upon tightening. I was extra careful, as they are made of aluminum--but the thickness of the handles is quite thin, and it immediately stripped out. I don't think this will matter though, as the main threads on the handles appear to be enough to maintain a connection to the tongs. The safety glasses were packaged under the furnace, and arrived broken. Even if they had not been--I wouldn't use them, as they appeared very cheap/flimsy. I suggest buying yourself a good set of safety glasses if you don't already have one. Twice in my life I'm sure that they have saved my vision.     • Great furnace! Lots of possibilities!
This furnace is an inexpensive and easy way to get started in melting and casting metals. I have used mine to melt various alloys purchased from the scrapyard, which I pour into the provided ingot mold to make machinable stock. I use that stock to create parts on my metal lathe and mini mill. I'll try sand casting next! I have a 3D printer to make "positives" for mold making, and there is now a 3D printable resin for lost wax casting. I'm very excited about the possibilities! Melting and casting is oddly satisfying, and I've purchased a second one as a gift for a blacksmith friend. He's interested in trying to forge various non-ferrous alloys. ... show more
