  • This is a pretty fun toy bass; nothing more.
in 30 years of playing bass, I have never owned a fretless but always wanted one. I found the Gold Tone and thought, well, I don't have a fretless, I don't have an acoustic so let's give it a try. At a price point below $600 it was worth the risk. For some reason I guess I expected a professional instrument, but that's just not the 25FL's class. Pros: It's fun to play and learn on, especially with the original rubber strings. Acoustically it's not very loud, but sounds decent plugged in, although the pickup gets a lot of neck, finger and body noise. It's VERY lightweight. The intonation is decent and the feel of the neck is good, for a short-scale. It came with a pretty decent gig bag. Cons: It's not something that I could really use in a live situation (probably not even in a coffee house, etc.) which is a bummer. The action is incredibly high (about 3/8" off the fretboard at the 9th fret). The neck isn't bowed, it's just built with high action. This is OK with the rubber strings but.. I changed the strings to Silverbacks and with the increased string tension, the action just isn't workable, except to dink around the house. The Silverbacks accentuate the ambient finger noise in the pickup. The noise is often louder than the notes so plugging in isn't a great option. It feels like a toy. The bass just weighs a few pounds and it's apparent it's not made to leave the house - it's just too fragile. Ultimately, playability is the biggest limiting factor for this guy. For a beginner it would be a fun little bass, but only with the rubber strings and probably the fretted version. It's very difficult to play the fretless one with the Silverback strings, although those strings make it much louder acoustically. Plugged in, it's probably too noisy to record with or play live. I'll keep it around and put the rubber strings back on. ... show more

  • almost perfect
This is a pretty awesome bass. It's surprisingly playable and very fun to play. The tone plugged in or acoustic is truly amazing! I'm convinced you could use this bass in place of a full upright double bass and get equal or better tone. The onboard tuner, eq, and pickup are great not just gimmicks they work well. The silicone strings are great! they sound incredible through an amp. a little lube helps a lot. The tone possibilities with the silicone strings alone are quite wide with just the onboard eq. I've not tried the metal ones but i imagine they sound incredible. The short neck makes fretless accuracy difficult as a non seasoned player but it is what it is. the gig bag is quality. A couple complaints. This instrument is nearly $500 and i feel like i have to be very careful with it. maybe it just feels delicate, but boy does it feel delicate. I get that the thin walls are part of what gives it such great sound. for that price they could have included a thumb rest. you really need one. There are many available that would work. Some of the fret marker inlays are too wide for the neck and stick out so they can catch on things, and some of them are very loose. I can barely touch some and practically pop them right out of their groove with upward pressure. Way too delicate and poor constructed fret markers for this price. ... show more

  • Goldtone Microbass is a blast to play!
This is a really fun bass to play! The rubber strings and fretless neck give it a unique sound quality. You can’t bend the strings, but you can slide up and down the neck and it sounds like a double bass!

  • Goldtone Mbass
The unit arrived in good condition. However, when i plugged it in half the pickup worked. Not sure how that is give that it's a bridge pickup. But the sound only came from the two low string. The two high string had no sound. Sent it back. I had purchased a 23" one from musicians friend and also had to send it back. That one had a bad pop when the bridge was touched. I thought i could live with it, but after playing for 30 minutes I couldn't stand the popping noise. Sent it back and ordered the 25" from Amazon because it came with a free case. I'll wait till something better comes along. ... show more

  • I love my GT bass
I love mine. It has a nice rich tone, great for soft jazz. Has more of a string bass sound.
