  • Screws too cheap and too short
They appear to be ok, I'm not happy with the cheap screws that come with it to replace the original body screws and they are just barely long enough, going back to an old set and will mount my single lights elsewhere because I just don't trust these

  • Sturdy bracket, missing some hardware
These brackets seem very sturdy and heavy duty, the installation was easy enough and they have room for adjustment. I found that the included bolts are missing washers / lock washers and so may work themselves loose over time. I would recommend adding some yourself or using some loctite to ensure a long lasting hold. ... show more

  • Need to be careful about hood clearance depending upon which way it is installed
DIFFICULTY LEVEL: 1-beer -- because *every* project starts out with a beer, so that is the lowest difficulty possible. In actuality though, I had just finished that beer as I walked in the house after finishing installing the brackets, and that even includes having to disassemble the vertical members and reinstall them facing the rear to keep them from denting the hood when it was raised all the way. BACKGROUND: ##INSERT-BACKGROUND## INITIAL OBSERVATIONS: There are no instructions whatsoever, but after reviewing the ad, I was able to figure out (more or less) how it needed to be attached. I had previously reviewed some light pod mounts that installed in the same area, so I was already somewhat familiar with what would need to be done. The brackets are made from a thick aluminum that is nicely machined. There is a coating that I initially thought might be an anodyzed finish, but after reviewing the ad, I see that it is a powder coating. It's a smoother powder coating than I normally see for offroad equipment though. Then again, for $46, it *better* be a step above the alternatives. COMPLAINTS / ISSUES: If you look at the ad closely, you'll see that they are using two different ways of installing the vertical members of the bracket. In one photo, they show it with the L-shape of the bracket pointing forward and in another photo, it is pointing aft. I initially installed it with the brackets pointing forward because I was concerned that the light bar might intefere with the windshield wipers. After completing the installation, I tested the hood clearance and discovered that the brackets would dent the hood if you opened it all the way (like the dealership does when they are working on in the engine compartment). I didn't want to risk that, so I reversed the brackets (which also required switching sides). I can now open the hood all the way until it touches the windshield without it hitting the brackets. Whether it will also clear the light bar when I install it (waiting on Vine to offer me a light bar to review), I don't know. The coating on the brackets is definitely powder-coating and not anodizing because when swapping sides on the vertical members, I noticed where the coating had been scratched and the bare aluminum was showing through. If this was a steel part, that would be more of an issue. I've noticed that powder-coated steel will get a nick in it and allow corrosion to develop underneath it and eventually it will bubble up. For a $46 part, they should have anodized it. The spacers that they included with the hardware rest directly on the painted surface inside the bolt recesses in the hood. Although the original factory bolts also did this, they had a larger surface area and were not prone to movement. These spacers though have an inner diameter significantly larger than the bolts that go through them, so there is the potential for movement and thus abrasion on the paint. To help reduce the possibility of this, I decided that a HDPE washer that was exactly the same size as the bolt recess (so that it could not move around) and slightly smaller than the bolt (so that it would be more watertight) might be a good idea. Since I have a mini-lathe, that was easy enough to create. It appears that the rubber washers that you use on garden hoses would also be the right size. The bolts (machine screws) that attach the brackets to the vehicle are shorter than the bolts that attached the previous pillar light brackets, so I used the old ones instead. Actually, I was able to install this with the previous pillar brackets, so that gives me two pillar pod points if I ever need them. IMPRESSIONS: Overall, I'm satisfied with the look of the part after it was installed. Installation was easy and in fact, it takes me longer to write this review than it did to do the installation. CONCLUSION: The seller should provide an installation sheet with the product and it should point out why/when you might want the vertical support members pointing forward or aft. All in all though, I think it is worth a 3.5-star (i.e. "slightly above average") rating. It seems to be an acceptable method for mounting a light bar onto the hood area of a Jeep JL. STAR RATING SCALE: 1 -- Poor product; Waste of money at ANY price; Blatant lies in the original listing. 2 -- Below average product; Something about it is a bit lacking; It could be conflicted specifications or errors in the original listing or that it was arrived with damage that was unlikely to have occurred during shipping and should have been caught in either the manufacturer's or seller's quality control. 3 -- Average product; Meets expectations, perfectly serviceable, but does not do anything that sets it apart from similar products; Does not have some features that makes me say, "Wow, that's a neat feature". 4 -- Above average product; Something about it sets it a bit above similar products on the market. 5 -- Excellent product (or perhaps customer service); There is NO room for improvement whatsoever; NOTHING is perfect, so this rating *should* be EXTREMELY difficult to achieve.
